So I was at my local library and I found a series of superhero comic books called "Empowered". So I thumbed through it and I just don't get it. It looks like softcore hentai, but like PG-13. Am I missing out on something, or is it just crap? I mean, I like some of Adam Warren's work, hell, I'm even watching him on dA (cuz my friend's friend is my friend), but I'm just like WTF? So what's the deal? It doesn't look any good to me. Lemme hear your opinion.

    No, no. It's crap.

It's some kinda specifically-targeted fetish book for people who wanna see a superheroine tied up all the time. In fact, that is its genesis.

I tried reading a volume and...yeah...it's crap. Not well written and so full of jokes it's actually cluttered and the world feels incoherent because everything is some sort of joke, reference, or pastiche.

I liked it the jokes, the action and most of the characters like anything else ymmv. It's not really a fetish book more like it pokes fun at erotica

Word. Really funny book. Spoofs most of the "erotica" in comics currently.

Still looks like crap and an excuse for fanservice for me. I mean, I read Coeleptera's articles and the entire thing was based on a bondage sketch from a convention so meh. Maybe I'm not old enough to understand it without just pointing "PORN!!!" every two seconds. IDK.

    Respectfully disagree.

It took a volume or two, but there's an ongoing plotline and several mysteries buried under all that fanservice. You just have to look for it.

    Heh. This sounds awesome.

I'll have to look for it.

On that note I like Adam Warrens stuff, I liked how his Dirty Pair got better and better each year, but then he sort of fell of the radar.

Perhaps I should have said "you need to keep an eye out for it".

There're several ongoing plot threads that appear in the series, some of which have been resolved and most of which haven't. Adam Warren seems to be building up to something, so I'm sticking around for the ride for now. The most pervasive mysteries thus far are:

    • Who sent Empowered her super suit and why.
    • What exactly her super suit is.
    • The exact nature of the mysterious "capekilling incident" several years ago that Thugboy was involved in.
    • How Ninjette is going to be dealing with the members of her ninja clan family tracking her down.
    • The exact nature of Willie Pete.
    • What Manny's been up to with dWARf.
There've been several seemingly minor incidents which have become major plot points. Sistah Spooky's seemingly irrational hatred of Empowered, which could've been written off as a simple rivalry, was actually explained and has since become rather central to her character. Even her joke of an origin took a deadly serious turn in the current volume.

One thing that's interesting is that, in this particular fictional universe, it's been slowly revealed that superheroes are hardly paragons of virtue and morality. They're either messed up in the head due to childhood issues or trauma, psychotic, or, quite simply, douchebags. The entire superhero community is like high school: organized into cliques filled with petty jealousies, rivalries, backstabbings, dirty secrets, and competitiveness, with the metahuman equivalent of jocks and princess picking on the metahuman equivalents of nerds, geeks, and otherwise unpopular kids. When it was initially revealed that Empowered's boyfriend, Thugboy, was an ex-supervillain henchman and was somehow involved in a notorious mass murder of superheroes in San Francisco several years earlier, things seemed pretty clear cut. These ongoing revelations, however, have blurred the lines to the extent where everything is now an almost uniform shade of gray.

    Zombie thread.

I finally got around to picking this up (vol #2 because vol #1 was out of stock) and I really liked it. Ordered vol #1 and got a total of 7 volumes to look forward to.
