Which do you Perfer? For a while, it was Greg Land; His art was just mind-blowingly realistic to me; I loved how everything just popped off the page whenever I read Ultimate Fantastic Four. Then later on, when the thrill of Land was gone, I kinda swayed over to Adam Hughes, who, despite his fixation on Lara's Boobs, is really good with sketches.

Not even a contest. I'm a big AH fan. He did a great run on JLI, and is responsible for the classic Fire and Ice costumes. Plus he's done some really sexy and funny Power Girl sketches.

Uh...I'm honestly not trying to be a troll, but you are aware of Greg Land's reputation, right? I can see the attractiveness of his art, but, uh...he just traces, man. It just boggles my mind how a hack like him keeps getting hired.

forget about the tracing rep. even if greg did not trace, AH is still the better artist, bot cover and interior. too bad AH doesnt do the latter much these days. chk out old issues of JL and gen13 (i think). AH is damn fluid, bollandesque even.

I have no idea where all this Land traces stuff comes from. I'm not saying it not true, only that I'm surprised to be hearing about it becuase I hadn't up till recently. And if it is true it's such as shame because Sojourn and Phoenix: Endsong had some of the most awesome art I've ever seen in a comic. I'd hate to learn Land is just another hack like Pat Lee. So what the real story on Greg Land?

Here You Go (Let's try to keep this thread who one perfers rather than Greg Land's 'Tracing', eh?):

    Controversy

Land's fans regard his work as ultra-realistic and commend the beauty of his work. His critics charge that the faces of his female characters look generic and inconsistent, that his poses and facial expressions are stiff and unrealistic, and that he does too much photo-referencing and tracing, most notably for some of the poses and expressions traced from pornography.

Beyond the photo referencing claims, he has been accused of simply tracing (or possibly digitally altering) photographs and even drawings by other comic artists. Aside from some obvious references such as Hugh Jackman for Wolverine, an image of Mr. Fantastic merges perfectly with an image of Topher Grace, and an image of Magneto putting on his helmet is an exact match for an image of Brad Pitt doing the same. Also, in the Ultimate Fantastic Four story arc "Crossover" one scene of an older Susan Storm from the Marvel Zombies universe almost completely matches Jessica Alba (who played her in the 2005 Fantastic Four film). Land's work often differs so little from his references that they may be located independently. For the cover to Ultimate Power #1, a picture of Spider-Man follows a similar drawing by Travis Charest line for line, with only a slight change in pose. Further criticisms of Land's work include the fact that he endlessly repeats the same facial expressions for the same characters. For example, in Land's run on Ultimate Fantastic Four the same, clearly traced or copied, expression for the Human Torch has been used over 7 times. Land acknowledges that he does Google searches for references, but denies that has ever done any digital manipulations, and says he doesn't have the computer skills to perform them.

Thanks for the info. I had no idea. Real shame. So we've got a playgerizer vs. cheesecake? Some choice! Either way it female readers like me lose. Sigh.

There were complaints about this way back when he was with Crossgen, where one of the Sojourn covers he made appeared to be a reverse of a Sports Illustrated cover.

Way Way back when he was on Nightwing you'd often catch him using poses that the artist previously on the book used. If you do a web search they have a page devoted to finding the original pictures he refrenced.

Hughes is more than just a cheesecake artist. He's actually a really competent storyteller. It's just that his more pin-up style art is the stuff that gets shown the most. Try picking up an actual comic that he's illustrated, not just one of his stand alone drawings. The guy is really talented.

Here's a few examples of Land tracing his work:

He even traces other artists' work:

Here he is, tracing Brad Pitt from "Troy" and using him for Magneto.
