Bobby Kotick: Activision Eyes Subscription Fees For Guitar Hero World Tour User-Created Songs

Would anyone actually be willing to pay for the ability to download the crippled (and likely crap) user created tracks for this game?

I know I wouldn't. Soundclick and other sites let people upload real MP3's for free.

The review I read said the created tunes are about MIDI (ringtone) quality. If that's true, no way am I paying for that.

I ain't paying for that, the songs aren't as good as a real guitar and I'd rarely use it anyways. I'd just make a song I like on my own disc

How frickin' dumb is that. I bet you won't be able to preview the song and see how it sounds. So you'd be paying for something that could be downright shite! That's bs.

I don't think this is Activision simply beaing greedy.

I suspect this has something to do with the fact that Activision would have to pay a small licence fee anyway just for hosting these user tracks, just because they're based off someone elses work. I mean, if I did a cover of a Beatles song for this Michael Jackson would expect payment.

Where would this money come from? Activision would be out of pocket if they ponied up themselves. I dunno, it sucks, but at least the thinking is to just to subscribe to these songs, and presumably once subscribed you can download as many of the user generated songs as you like during that period.

So really, its a compromise. At least its not charge you per downloaded user song, unlike the normal Developer tracks.

They can't use that excuse. They are yanking, or plant to yank, any and all "covers" from the GH Tunes server. It is pure and simple corporate greed.

Haha, out of those 25,000 songs they are talking about, only about 2 are worth downloading. They can try to charge for it all the want, but the quality of most of the stuff uploaded is garbage.

Who in their right mind would pay for user-created crap that you can't even preview?
