I wasn't expecting something spectacular, but at least decent voice-acting, I was somewhat shocked to find out how incredibly generic the voices were

Though I was listening to the beginning of another and I have to say it had one of the best Transformers themes in my opinion because of the sheer campiness

audio book? As in the tape that would accompany a kid's storybook? Or an audio book of the novelization of the movie?

I assume it would be the the first one, because I don't think there was novel adapted from the '86 movie. All I know is that it came as an mp3 in a torrent I downloaded that had several other audio books and the soundtracks of several Japanese TF cartoons

Sounds like the Ladybird Books. Which were, indeed, just audio recordings that accompanied kids' storybooks.

Those books were great. I loved the one with Powermaster Prime and Scorponok. Scorponok's voice was great. Always how I imagined it. Similar to ROTF Soundwave.

That's some old school ish right there! I remember audio books with the vinyl records (that slid out from the book's inside cover), not sure if there were ever any TF ones.

So does this give you the *boop* sound to tell you when to turn the page?

I've still got my Ladybird books and tapes. I always loved the one where the top of a mountain got shot off and Jazz was all 'Half of it's gone!' in a dreadful accent. 'Autobots Lightning Strike' I think.
And yes, those books did have a great version of the TF theme.

Here's the one for Autobots' Lighting Strike!

YouTube - Autobots' Lightning Strike Part 1 of 3 - Transformers audio book

I loved the Ladybird Books as a nipper. They're really quite smartly written, and they're like the only piece of early G1 fiction to actually put the emphasis on "robots in disguise", with a great feel of a shadow war fought without humanity learning about Transformers.

:lol  I just heard it right now provided by the link before. It really is dreadful, but hilarious! I agree the TF Theme sounds nice on there. Vintage 80's synthesizer stuff.

Are there any similar books on tape (Compact Disc now) type releases for Transformers these days? I know Disney have those book and CD readalong things but I'm thinking how cool it would be to have for TF with the robot voice effects and lasers and explosions and transformation sounds and music.
But then I suppose it's now easier to throw a DVD on or download an episode to your phone.

Actually, they should have a soundchip and mini speaker built directly into the book.
