And this kids, is why you should turn off the computer and go outside and get some fresh air from time to time.

Next we're gonna have people arguing whether its favor or favour.

beginning of 2000 to beginning of 2001 = 1 year

    so,
    2000 to 2001 = 1 year
    2001 to 2002 = 1 year
    2001 to 2003 = 1 year
    2003 to 2004 = 1 year
    2004 to 2005 = 1 year
    2005 to 2006 = 1 year
    2006 to 2007 = 1 year
    2007 to 2008 = 1 year
    2008 to 2009 = 1 year
    2009 to 2010 = 1 year

How many "1 year"s did I write? 10. Are you going to say those simple calculations are wrong? Remember, I didn't count 2010; I only used it as a marker for the end of 2009, and it still equates to 10 whole years.

As far as I'm concerned, having decades end in 1 is an error carried down from the first error -- having the first year be year 1. When they retroactively established the calendar years, they should have made 1 AD/1 CE year 0 AD/0 CE. Because they didn't, the first decade was not a decade per se, but a 9 year span.

    Number axes don't go from ..., -2, -1, 1, 2, ...

It could be worse. We could have people telling Canadians to properly announce the word "about" instead of "aboot".

Isn't pronouncing it "aboot" technically middle English?

Anywho. Trying run a decade from 0-9 is just failing at ten base math. People get way to hung up on that first digit.

i think the real problem is that americans keep thinking that they hear "a boot" when it's really more like "a boat"... which sounds a lot better than "a baowt"

OR we could do our research and learn that 'aboot' is actually said by eastern Canadians, Southern Scots and North-East England. Canadians in general do not say 'aboot'.

Honestly? I'll accept the beginning or end of the decade as being wherever people want, if it puts an end to all of the "best of the last decade", "review of the last decade", "things to come in the next decade", decade, decade, decade stuff that's been going on for the last few weeks.

Quoted for truth. I'm from western Canada and I can't begin to count the number of times I've had people down here tell me I don't "sound Canadian" because I don't say 'eh' and 'aboot'. All Canadians don't sound like Eastern Canadians any more than all Americans sound like New Yorkers or Texans.

There's more to "eastern Canada" than Ottawa. :dunce  I don't know anyone that pronounces about "a-boot." Not. A. Single. Person. Granted I come from a city. I have heard a-butt or a-bot from hicks.

Although Newfoundlanders might, but who can really understand them anyway? ;)

Ottawa isn't even eastern. I'm from NB, and i have yet to hear anyone say "aboot". i think someone made that one up.

and yea, the decade started at 2001, because there was no year 0.

Bob and Doug Mackenzie from SCTV actually. And I bet their accent was based on people from rural Ontario.

The only real Canadian specific dialect (is it even qualifies for that) that I've run across that's really noticeable to me, are the guys who say "right" every three words.
