    But the 100th penny marks the end of the first dollar, not the first part of a new one. You don't have 99 pennies, get the 100th one, and then say, "This 100th penny is the start of my second dollar." You don't have the start of a new dollar until the 101st penny arrives.

    after reading all this bickering, I really don't know what side i'm on.

    It is true we didn't start at year zero. When people count to ten, you don't say "0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10", you start at 1.

    However.... yeah, 1990 wasn't part of the 80's.


    I've seen this argument on CNN and ESPN... nobody really has an answer.

    So i'm going to do what they did...

    Did you hear Tiger Woods slept with 12 women?

    Any group of 10 consecutive years is a decade.

    I'm sure that all, or the majority, of people here can accept this definition?

    Thus, 2000 to 2009 is acceptable to be called a decade.

    Actually it didn't go that way at all. Considering no one marked BC years when they were passing. 1 AD was a retro-active estimate they was put in place in the first or thrid century AD by Christians. Who continued the Jewish pratice of assinging years a number based on a defined start date. Which for Jews is the Rabbinical reckoning for the creation of Adam (BTW it's the Jewish year 5770 Anno Mundi). Christians chose the birth of Jesus. And if the concept of zero as we know it had been invented yet (it wasn't) it might have been used.

    Change your settings. It's only a 3 page argument on my screen.

    By that logic, I can start and end my decades ending in 3. 2004-2013 will be my decade so I will celebrate the end of the decade on Dec 31 2013.

    The point being, that any ten year period can be a decade. Which is why you call 1990-1999 the 90's. It's a decade because it's a 10 year period with "ninety" in the name. However, we are counting from the beginning with every 10 years being a decade. So in chronological terms, the year ending in 0 is always the last year of a decade. 2001 was the beginning of the new millennium, and 2011 will be the beginning of the new decade. However, when referring to an isolated period of time ( outside of the chronological stream of time ), you can call any 10 year period you wish a decade. Which is what we do with things like "the 80's". They're a decade, but not a chronological decade.

    Y'know, I might actually listen to the people who are all like "NO, THE DECADE DOESN'T END UNTIL 2011!!" if they weren't such colossal douchebags about it.

    Seriously, I got an ass full of that back in 1999. Nobody gives a shit.

Doing the math, it’s easy to see that 1999 more years needed to elapse to end the 20th century, and so its demise was on that last calendar day of 2000. January 1, 2001 marked the first day of the 21st century.

    But we don’t reckon decades like that. We refer to them by the tens place in the year’s numerals: the 70s, the 80s, the 90s. And since we do, clearly, today is the last day of the decade we will call the aughts or zeroes or whatever."

    On the other hand, I know that the '80s didn't end until Saved By the Bell went off the air in 1993, so your mileage may vary.

    I see what you mean, but honestly, who really cares. Most people, myself included, observe decades numerically instead of chronologically. I don't care if this is still the 201st decade of the Gregorian Calendar, the Double 0's are now a thing of the past.

    Like Insane Galvatron pointed out, any period of ten years can be called a decade, whether it's chronological or not. So if the ten year period of 2000-2009 is over, then that decade ended. Of course, by using numeric figures, you can use just about any year to start & end your own personal decade (such as 1992-2002 or 2002-2012).

    So really, it all just really boils down to a matter of perspective.
