"...we feel action should be emphasized over plot—especially avoiding any complicated story lines—to ensure the success of this series with its intended viewers. ”

—Bryce Malek and Dick Robbins, Transformers story editors, Marvel Productions internal correspondence

    Very intresting, indeed.

    And ?

If I was a kid in the eighties I would rather want giant robots fighting than story lines

little kids don't really care about complex plots.

it wasnt until people were writing cartoons for mixed-age audiences that they started focusing on plot, and that started in the 90's. This doesnt just go for transformers, it goes for, well, every non-japanese cartoon show. ever.

I see what you're trying to do (troll G1 fans), and you're doing it badly. You didnt even seem to try and understand what you were quoting. Because of this, you just look silly.

They were just doing everything that every other cartoon on TV was doing at the time. there's no reason to single out Transformers for this. there's no reason to criticize it.

and later Transformers did focus on plot in season 3. Hell, they probably put more effort into the story of the season 3 episodes than any other non-japanese show in the 80's.

Makes sense. Little kids, really little kids, wouldn't care about the plot. Just the action.

Quite. I know it's cliché, but can't we all just get along and stop harshing on everyone and everything?

Heh. Yeah, too bad none of that brilliant storytelling from G1 was implemented into the movie franchise. Just saying.

Which was, amusingly enough, after the story editors who gave the quote had left, and been replaced with Flint Dille, Marv Wolfman and Steve Gerber.

I love G1 as much as the next nostalgic, toy-buying geek... but what "brilliant storytelling" are you talking about?

    Opening credits.

    Decepticons do bad stuff.

Autobots roll in to knock that shit off.

Sprinkle in a healthy dose of puns and sight gags.

    Decepticons run away.

    End credits.

Let's be fair. G1 was an 80s cartoon. Outside of it's retro charm, brilliant storytelling is not exactly the best way to describe it.....

I'm just wondering what was going within the heads of two people that were involved with the cartoon that started this craze.

Let's also be fair and say that 22-minute episodes targeted at pre-adolescent children are often not the best forums for deep philisophical commentary and overarching intrigue-filled plots, as opposed to giant robots with simple yet endearing characterizations wrecking up the place.

Here I am, still wishing that the G1 cartoon was a frame-for-frame, word-for-word adaptation of the Marvel G1 comics.

Same here or at least adapt cthe comic book stories.

Also, I like Beast Wars and Machines. I also like Cybertron/Galaxy Force. I enjoy most of the comic adaptations of G1 and Armada.
