This just aoccured to me. Not since BW have we had a line of TF without stupid gimmicks.

Neo G1 has brought it back to the basics. Hasbro finally realised that transforming from a object to a robit IS the gimmick.

Thank God almighty gimmick free at last.

If I am wrong about this and missed something fromt he Astrotrain mould please LMK.

    Thanx

P.S. Discuss your opinions of a TF line(adise from ALTS) where there are no minicon, combining or energon key gimicks.

Word, I think the major gimmick stuff came in with Armada. Don't get me wrong, I liked some of the gimmick stuff, but it is cool to get some pretty basic stuff again, where the major thing is simply being able to transform.

Beast Wars had its gimmicks, they were just more in terms of the design than what the toy did.
The first run Transmetals featured the "gimmick" of metallic finishes and third modes.
Fuzors had the "gimmick" of being two animals fused into one.
Transmetal IIs had the gimmick of being techno-organic. And featured some metallic finishing.
The original run was more into the style of the beast mode being very realistic and the robot modes being quite poseable. Plus, the first wave basics had the auto-transforming, with the rest of the pre-Transmetal basics having "attack features".

Granted, the gimmicks were much more subtle and based far more around how the toys looked than anything else, but they were there. And in my opinion, that is the best type of gimmick.

Well that is what Im getting at. When I mentioned gimmick I ment it to be as an intrusive item that takes away from the toy. Such as, Minicon triggered gimmicks, the need to have bots combine or the Cybertron keys(which is a much better exacuted form of a minicon but lacks a storage place)

BW - RID had there gimmicks but each were contained withing the figure and none really took away from the figure.

    Thanx

P.S. Im speaking in general terms stop nit picking

I wouldn't call TMs, Fuzors and TM2s "gimmicks", those were just the "themes" or the "look" of the line. Having a 3rd mode for TMs is a gimmick, but their styling isn't. Astrotrain has the gimmick of a 3rd mode, but the Neo-G1 designs being more realistic isn't a "gimmick".

BW had individual gimmicks/action features just like BM and RID, and some of Neo-G1 will likely have. The seeker prototype appeared to have missile launchers in its arm-mounted guns. What these lines do not have is a line-wide gimmick like Minicons & activated features or cyber keys or Energon Powerlinking. The Energon Decepticons really didn't have quite as extensive a gimmick... just sometimes "hidden" missile launchers and a "hyper mode" which is nothing but attack modes that are often common extra little features.

Yeah I totally agree...the Armada/Energon/Cybertron Toys have been great (well...at least Energon and Cybertron have) but it will be nice to get the line back to it's roots!

I have always said that TFs do not need added gimmicks...the fact they they transform IS the gimmick. I much prefer the subtle gimmicks from g1 , beast era, and RID over the obnoxious Minicons, Cyber Keys and power linking from energon. Out of the last three, cybertron, to me, is the best. Armada next and lastly that craptastic line called ENERGON. Man I was glad when that line was over. I bought hardly any figures until the end of the series. I think the combiners are the best of energon. Their only gimmick is a familiar one...they Combine :)  I eagerly await TFs without line wide gimmicks.

They have a gimmick, real car alt modes. And that does hamper the toys quite a bit IMO (lots of repaints, lackluster weaponry, only one non-car).

Gimmicks are okay, I don't mind them. I thought Headmasters were awesome when I was 6, toywise. It's when the gimmick becomes what it's all about when it disturbs me.

I don't mind gimmicks, where they fit. It's line wide gimmicks, I have problems with. Some of the toys always suffer, to have the gimmick forced in, where it really won't fit. At least in Cybertron, they put it in the weapons of the toys that didn't have space for the gimmick. (Now, I just need decent guns for swerve and Clocker.)

Actually wouldn't the last half of BM the Battle for the Spark or whatever it was called would be a gimmick wouldn't it. Anyway, I see the point being made.
