Let's assume that he'll be mute, like we've been told based on the leaked draft of the script. Let's also suppose that by the end of the movie or its sequel that Ratchet fixes him and he can talk again. Evidence does suggest he gets major repairs, after all.

So, what if while he's running around damaged, he wears a protective mask over his damaged mouth and voicebox? A protective mask like the one on the original G1 toy. Then when he gets all fixed up, he reveals a face like he has in the G1 comics and TV show? How cool would that be?

Is this a new development? Reports from the leaked script were that Soundwave/byte was described as having a mouth.

    Source?

I gotta admit that this surprises me a bit. Previous info mentioned that Optimus' faceplate was retractable and would reveal a mouth for when he had to do some (regular) talking - though I don't suppose his face mask would retract every time he gave a battlefield order.

Apparently, if what you say is indeed true, they ran into difficulties designing "convincing" robo-mouths and decided to just have "holes". That's very disappointing if it's for real - I was hoping for a cool representation of robots moving well-designed, robotic lips whenever talking.

OT: This sounds like a cool idea. Reveal a proper BB face at the end.

A while back I posted a thought that you could possibly give robots convincing faces with humanoid mouths by giving them a "skin" of woven metal of the sort found inside car engines protecting tubing. it would be flexible, and could have little servo motors underneath it to allow for robotic facial expression. The concept of having a Starscream who can't smirk is, quite frankly, appaling.
