With each earthquake that devastates a country around the world I am reminded of living in a region that have seen its fair share of quakes. I hope that when it does come to SoCal the damage will be minimal and casualty kept to a minimum. Still can't take my eyes off CNN. Those footages of tsunamis look so sickening and brutal. Cars, Ships, and Houses all swept away like nothing. It's going to take a very long time for Japan to recover from this I am afraid.
I used to live in Okinawa, Japan when I was in the service. A Tsunami in that small island will do some major damage there. I also grew up in Hawaii. I hope my friends and family will be safe and a tsunami does not hit there. I do live near the beach here in San Diego and won't be sleeping anytime soon.
With family there, I can certainly understand why you're worried, I know I've watched the Discovery/Science channels Earthquake series and they usually tell us that the entire Pacific Rim can/will be in serious trouble. You're right, these quakes are happening with a frequency that is very troubling. Just hope and pray that if anything happens in the future, they are not even close to the same magnitude as Japan's. Wave...hope your family and friends will be safe...also doesn't Hawaii have the tsunami alarms/sirens??
Waikiki's part of the Evacuation zone. They got it were they go to the third floor or higher. the roads are pretty freaky with everyone trying to get gas and water and food at Costco and stuff. Oh, and I don't got no cell reception either, so if your buddy don't call, maybe the receptions just bad.
I'm preparing just in case my son and I have to evacuate. We will head 1 hour north east where my parents live. I'm packing clothes, important documents and photos. The toys can stay behind.
Japan wasn't the only one hit. China got one earlier in the day China rescuers search town after quake kills 25 | ajc.com
They were just talking about the Beijing damage on CNN, but I didn't hear about this area and how many were killed..
Thanks. Yes they do have tsunamis alerts. My friend in Maui lives in high grounds, but she was told to be prepared to evacuate. The rest of the family in Oahu are ready to leave their houses.
Dang! Waverider, hope you and yours will be safe.. saw your post about getting ready to evacuate if needed..Hope you won't have to!
You know, as a life long southern californian, I've never let the possibility of the "big one" worry me. But man am I starting to feel uneasy. Is it our turn now? Are we next? Worried about that tsunami now. Lotta friends in the path of that. Can't get into touch with friends in Japan either, but that is not surprising. Gonna be hard to sleep tonight.
I grew up in the Bay Area and the day I moved out of there in 2007, I felt like I had a huge burden lifted off my shoulders. That I never had to have my physical self go through a big one again. But that burden was replaced with one of worry for my family that still lives there. What's crazy about this Japan earthquake was that there was a 7.2 one on Wednesday off the coast of Japan. It's as if mother nature got pissed off that nothing happened on the first try and decided to up the ante.
Thanks. I have most of stuff packed, all I have to do is put them in the car. I live 4 houses from the beach. I'll try to get some rest now. I got a phone call to be prepared. They expect waves to hit my area around 8:45AM. I might leave in a few hours. Traffic will be hell in the morning with people leaving.
This might help. I'm monitoring the NOAA website very closely. National Weather Service Watch Warning Advisory Summary
