Sooo... Jin blew me away with his TF paint jobs. I took a look at his site, read his tutorials, and decided to give it a go myself. The conclusion:

    Dry brushing 4 life.

I'm amazed at what can be done! Anyway, I'm in the middle of a '77 Bee repaint. I mostly just have to do the car panels/rust to finish. I modeled Bee's head and limbs to look similar to what Jin did to his toys.

So if you're reading, Jin, thanks a million! You've inspired the heck out of me and have a great web page for painting resources. :D

By the way, these aren't my results right out of the gate... A movie Dreadwing is sitting on my table looking a bit ugly right now, the unfortunate victim of "new technique trial-and-error". :D  After all, I didn't want to foist my growing pains upon Bumblebee. :p

so is gunmetal the secret color to bring out robot textures? I'm planning on some of this, and you're right, jin's got an awesome site. I checked it out last night.

Wow! Your Bee's face looks great. None of his figures actually look like his movie counterpart, and I think you've done a great job of recreating that. The metallics look great, too. ;)

    No gunmetal was used...

For the "big iron chunk" look I did a smooth full-coverage coat of Tamiya dark gray acrylic first, followed by a wash with Model Master "aircraft interior black" acrylic. Both are flat colors. Then I just dry brushed Tamiya "Titanium Silver" acrylic to finish.

When I wanted slightly different tones, I just switched up the shade of gray on the first coat.

Thanks man. I'm actually giddy about it myself. I had no idea paint/I could do this... I feel like it was a magic trick or something. :D

Hey Cheebs, do you think you could take some more close up shots of Bee's face and the side of his head? I'm working on mine right now, and I think it'd be a big help!

Rock!!! That looks awesome man, glad it worked for ya!

Ok, here's the drybrushing lowdown on metallics. All paints are Testors Acryl or Fantasy series.

For shiny basic basic drybrushing, lay down a base coat of Flat Black/Dragon Black and drybrush with Armored steel. Then Lightly highlight it with Argent Silver if you want for a two-tone silver, this makes it the most detailed.

To make a smoother, shinier metal, lay down a base of Testors Gunmetal (don't use this to drybrush, it's almost black and semi-gloss, won't work) and drybrush just Argent Silver on it. Turns into a more car-gloss metal, still detailed and weathered.

Some car mode pics and the head closeup as was requested above...

I also did a bit more work on the 'bot. I think once I figure out what to do with the front of the car to make it look less plastic I'll be done.

Yeah, not working for me either...

This is why we encourage people to use the "Manage Attachments" feature.

That way you dont have to worry about "running out of room" in your photo account....or even if you did get tired of the pics, and wanted to delete them from your photo account, they would/will always be hosted here....that way, months or even years from now, if someone wanted to look at the pics that go to the custom thread being viewed, they would still be here.

I think he's trying to make the point for people to attach their images when posting new threads. That's still a problem.
