Schools in the U.S. today are just FUCKED UP.

When I was in 5th grade, I never witnessed my peers having sex. In fact, sex wasn't he thought about among us. Yet my 5th grade was still like a real life version of HBO's Oz. When I went to school during the 5th grade I'd get savagely beaten by the other students, be made fun of and ridiculed, get threatened, and be kept from getting a good education. The adults often saw and knew what went on in the classroom and did NOTHING to stop it. To this day I'm still traumatized by those things that happened in 5th grade.

I feel sorry for those children who had to witness their peers having sex. They'll probably be traumatized for years to come, too.:cry

Witnessing sex might be uncomfortable under a lot of circumstances, but it shouldn't be traumatic. Unless there's something unusually messed-up about it. Or if it's your parents.

From a "glass half full" perspective......

It's refreshing to hear a story about students having sex in schools that doesn't involve teachers!

If the guy is 350lbs with a pizza face and the girl is 280 and hasn't shaved in a while, yeah, it can be traumatic.

The school I work at is very proactive in resolving issues like fights, bullies, and other inappropriate behavior. Some schools I would assume are a crapshoot, but generally teachers care about their students. I know I do.

As far as these kids having sex, they should not have been left unattended. That is the biggest no-no ever in education, you simply do NOT leave a class unattended, especially grade school. Of course I don't agree with them having sex, but had they been monitored, the inappropriate actions would have not taken place, at least not in the school. I would also place blame on the parents of the offending children; it would seem that the parents did not educate them about such matters.

Every generation that precedes the next always believes that the new generation is a bunch of rebellious, spoiled brats who will be the downfall of society (yeah it's a stereotype). Truth is that nearly all fifth graders are not sexually active in the US, obviously the news is going to point out the worst examples that our childbase has to offer.

That would fall under the "unusually messed-up" clause.

I think the parents are more to blame for the poor education they give to their kids. Too many adults are too bad at that job and should never be allowed to have kids in the first place.

Wow. When I was in 5th grade, the only thing I had on my mind were Transformers. :p  A sad state of affairs our world is in today. Kids are growing up too fast and just not allowed to BE KIDS.

(Sorry if any of this was said before, I just read the initial post and posted this reply...)

I know, I see several kids at school who are brats, then see them interact with their parents in a piss poor bitchy, bratty manner. It seems there is a trend today to be more of your kid's friend than their parent. Sorry, it goes parent first, friend second. It's sad that I have better interaction skills with kids, and yet I don't have any. Of course I am a teacher so that probably explains it...

And yes, we make our kids grow up too fast, childhood comes but once, then it's all downhill from there.

Huh, and I thought that my knowing the girl who knew what a "BJ" is was risque.

But I'm not all too surprised, I talked with a 13 year-old girl I tutored and she then brought up how she loved Vodka mixed with her Cola very nonchalantly, like it was nothing.

Someone already brought up the age thing, but I think it needs to be reemphasised before people start foaming at the mouth again.

Check out their ages. :)  11? That's pushing things for 5th grade. Most kids are 9-10 in 5th. 12-13 years old? Definitely pushing it. There's more going on then just collapsing morals here. I do think they need to start pushing sex ed earlier, but I question the intelligence of anyone who thinks doing it in class was a good idea.

Kids these days are developing way too fast. I shudder to think when my kids will start asking me about birds and bees. Maybe they'll learn everything from their classmates instead.

In my opinion its attitudes like yours, where sex questions are taboo and emabrassing that leads to situations like this, where kids have fucked up ideas and views on sexuality.

Good call, at the very least if kids are having sex in school, at least it wasn't with their teacher.

Can't ALWAYS use the parents as a scape goat. At times no matter how well a parent might raise a kid, sometimes the kid will do the opposite anyway. So it's not always the parents fault.

Besides when you're young, at times a kid's biggest influence is other kids. And these other kids might have an older sibling who'll share their ideals on sexuality with them. And then that little sibling shares those same ideals with his/her friends at school.

And sometimes kids just don't care, they may know better. But still do what they know they shouldn't

I completely blame the Internet. If we had the internet back when I was their age, man, things would have been different. Remember more than 50% of the internet is porn. Kids cannot escape that.

I think the worst part about the internet is that most kids know more about whats on it then their parents.
