Ok guys, I'm looking to get into some 3D programming. More specifically, I want to design things for 3D CAD files. What is a good program for creating 3D images? I'd like to design a multi part item, and have the programming so I can break it down to individual pieces. Ok, so technically I'd have to design the pieces separately and then put them together. I might be looking to design some transforming robots and have molds cut to cast them. The 3D images have to be CAD files.

Anyone who's done 3D work, can you recommend a good program? One that's relatively easy to learn, but can churn out some good results?

    Thanks ahead of time,
    IG

This topic would probably do better in the Fan Art forum. I use 3D Studio Max. It's relatively easy to use and the included tutorials are perfect for getting you started. Plus you can download a 30 day trial online.

I've worked in 3D Studio Max before (that was years ago and I cant show any of my work :*( ), but 3D Studio Max is a good overall 3D application program. As far as CAD files go, I cant remember what they are, I think 3DS can use them. Dont quote me on that.

Ok, where do I get studio max? Do they have a website? Google is useless, I only get tutorial pages...

Can a mod move this to the art forum?

I think this might be it. 3D Studio Max is also referenced as 3DS Max.

I found this website, Autodesk - Autodesk 3ds Max

That website is selling 3DS Max for over $3000 dollars. Yeah, that's insane but that also sounds about right sadly.

I got 3D Studio Max from a mass mailing warez group on AOL.

Edit: nvm. that was 12 years ago

An engineer at church told me he uses SolidWorks. He says it costs like $600, but I can get it for about $100 if I can produce a college ID. Anyone use it here?
