If I was an Olympic athlete heading to Rio de Janeiro, I would be nervous.

That's an understatement. Anyone wants to go down and compete in Brazil is a moron. They're probably going to end up getting Zika, among other things.

Yeah, not surprised. The country is a train-wreck. The corruption is so deep and widespread throughout. They've been dumping garbage and sewage into the water along the beaches for decades. The government is and has been in shambles for years, the entire country is virtually bankrupt, the level of poverty is on par with the flies on the children type of shit from Africa. It'a sad really. Rampant crime, little legit law enforcement, and 4th world type infrastructure are long-term problems that aren't going to solved or band-aided by the Olympics. In fact, they're probably going to be magnified to the point of shame and embarrassment.

I think in this day and age, the Olympics really should stop the city route and start looking at countries, because in the modern era none of the cities can handle it.

There are too many venues that they have to build, too much societal changes that they have to make to deal with the influx of that many people, and more to accommodate the games along with trying to "cover up the bad" that results in nothing but economic disaster and incomplete structures for a city to deal with after everyone leaves.

Athens hosting was the start of the Greek economy collapsing, Atlanta is still recovering, Sochi ended up costing the Russian people over 50 billion (US) and didn't even do anything for their global image, Bejing handled it well but now they've got a stadium that is completely empty and another that is a water park that's losing a million (US) a year, London handled it well so far, but even they can't claim tangible benefits from hosting.

Now we have Rio, a city that needs a 800 million (US) bailout to stay afloat and keep their employees paid right now, that is laughably behind on building structures they promised would be completed for housing and transporting the influx of people, is in a declared state of emergency by their governor, seriously wants it's competitors to compete in open water, and more.

Yeah, no thanks. Even if they do a good job during the Olympics, they're beyond screwed. There's no way Rio (and by extension Brazil) can take the debt that the Olympics causes in any healthy way.

The notion that hosting the Olympics would fix a country's/city's financial issues should've ended with live television. :/

Thats unfortunate that they're already getting off to a bad start. Hope they're able to identify the person and find their family.

What the Olympics really needs is a fixed location.

Between this and the *just* completed bike path crumbling when a large wave hit it, there isn't a chance in hell Rio will be ready. The infrastructure as is literally can't even hold together right now, it will never sustain the Olympics.

Rio never should have gotten the games and they should have been pulled more than a year ago. this is gonna be an utter shiatstorm.

I just hope security is not so lapse we have another mess on par with the murder of the Israeli team at the 1972 munich games.

Clearly there's so much money changing hands in Brazil by those who stand to benefit from the Olympics that regardless of disease epidemic, social unrest, poor infrastructure, etc. the uninformed public doesn't know any better- and the Olympics will go off no matter the end cost to anyone that attends.

Welcome to the nature of humans. No news here.
