BBC NEWS | UK | Magazine | Giving up my iPod for a Walkman

    Some bits are hilarious . . .

" It took me three days to figure out that there was another side to the tape. That was not the only naive mistake that I made; I mistook the metal/normal switch on the Walkman for a genre-specific equaliser, but later I discovered that it was in fact used to switch between two different types of cassette."

"I managed to create an impromptu shuffle feature simply by holding down "rewind" and releasing it randomly - effective, if a little laboured."

hahahhahahahhaha. i love how he calls the songs "tracks" as if they're stored as some sort of digital file format.
man, i loved my walkman back when i was 12. it was awesome. it's like when my 9 year old went to my mom's place and wanted to watch a movie and my mom pulled out a bunch of old vhs tapes. the look of confusion on her face at seeing them was priceless.

That was well written considering his age. He has a bright future ahead of him.

I thought he meant Walkman like sony's new walkman Mp3 player, which is a better player than my Iphone. Wow I feel old.

I just picked up an old walkman for my 11 year old son the other day. He found my box of tapes in the basement, and wanted to listen to them.

The way he describes how he made a shuffle feature is just flat-out funny.

Hmm, I'd say that was unbelievably well written for a 13 year old. I have serious doubts that it's all his own words.

I did like the idea of a genre specific eq just for metal. Everything needs a switch to make it Metal!

Now if he'd been trying out an 8-track player, "tracks" would have made more sense ;)

I used to have a kickass Walkman. It was red with silver trim, and to put a cassette in it, you had to slide the body open, then the tape door would unlatch.

At the time, it cost my uncle in the neighborhood of about $200.00 and he gave it to me as a Christmas present. I was 5, maybe 6 at the time.

    It was awesome.

I miss my old Walkman. Still got it packed up somewhere along with my Sony Discman.

Even as late as 2000, i preferred a Walkman to a CD player because Walkmans were still tons better.
    *more compact than CD players
    *No skip at all.
*Sturdier, more reliable & aside from the wear of playing a cassette out, my cassettes lasted a long time and didn' worry about scratches.

Personally History should have went like this:
    Cassettes->Mini-Disc->MP3 players
    *
