Deviations - Chris Ryall Discusses Departing from the Norm - IDW Publishing

Very cool and interesting concept, looking forward to reading the stories.

 

Did Optimus ever actually die in IDW? (Not the 'Death of Optimus Prime' one-shot, by 'death' I mean him actually kicking the bucket.)

 

He has not, in the IDW storyline. He's been seriously injured, but he's never fully died I don't think. Yet, anyway.

I'm assuming their referring to the original Optimus Prime from the G1 fiction.

 

I'm guessing it'll follow the G1 movie. Awesome!

 

So this will basically be an unaltered look at their current continuity.

 

I don't mind 'What Ifs'. I prefer them over continuity-meddling storylines such as Infestation 1, but eh.  

 

So, this will act as a 30th Anniversary celebration of TF:TM. Good. Then IDW can move on to celebrating Beast Wars' anniversary.

 

I don't get this anniversary thing.

It isn't. I believe it's a altered version of the Sunbow cartoon in which Optimus Prime didn't die from his injuries from the Battle of Autobot City. The Mars Attacks: The Transformers pretty much explored the concept of an alternate version of the Sunbow cartoon.

 

Looking forward to learning more about these what ifs. If they did one for Beast Wars too, that'll be awesome. Also, to Verno, love your sig.

Sounds cool if it's a take on TFTM, yeah. Would be more interesting to see a "What if Megatron had never encountered Whirl?", though. I wonder what the revolution would have looked like if he hadn't been set on the path that lead to him becoming a ruthless maniac.

 

so is this just a one-shot or ?

 

I may be wrong, but I'm assuming that each issue will be a standalone story, like the second Infestation (The Hearts of Steel Era story with the Old Ones and Lovecraft mythos.) or the X-Files crossover event.

 

Can we get some what If's on soemthing ELSE besides G1?

Like...

TFA; What if Elita One never became Blackarchnia
BW; What if Dinobot never died.
TFP: What if Breakdown lived and Bulkhead died?

 

I'm down for a few like TRansformers , G.I. joes and turtles.

 

Or TFP: What if Pax/Prime and Megatron never went seperate ways?

Be fair - if you're going to pick a pivotal, franchise-altering moment to look at an alternate outcome to for a single one-shot story, they don't really come any bigger or more famous than Prime's death.
