Looks like Leader Magnus has the MTMTE accurate deco BUT doesn't come with Minimus... instead, it's Alpha Trion!

Boy, I didn't see this one coming. I'm almost tempted to cancel my Hasbro pre-order so I can get the Autobot patriarch instead. Heck, I even like Ultra Magnus' colours slightly better (silver rims FTW!), even though I'm not sure why Maggie's thighs are red instead of white. It's neither cartoon-accurate or comic-accurate. Are they going for G1 toy-accuracy here?

 

Holy shit I'm torn...

 

What the hell?!

I was afraid Takara would do this.... Make an Ultra Magnus that is accurate in color to both the G1 toy and his season 1 appearance of More than Meets the Eye, but completely ruin it for IDW-fans by replacing Minimus Ambus with a random character that not only has no connection to Magnus himself, but is totally out of place as the dude who wears the armor.

I can see the 2-3 dudes who were like "No I hate Minimus Ambus, I will throw him away once I get the toy" being all over this, but I don't see the appeal of an IDW-inspired toy that utilizes a character concept from the comic with Minimus being able to pilot the armor being stripped from its personality and IMO the whole appeal.

This and in the first season of the comics his thighs were red.

 

Takara, you're so clever. This is how you make lemonade out of lemons my friends. They take a character that's unknown to their market/customers and make him into gold.

The UM deco looks a bit better. However, I actually like Minimus Ambus. I wonder if there will be enough people selling Minimi Ambi for me to get the Legends UM + separate Minimus.

 

Whipped up a quick comparison of this Magnus with the Hasbro version and the MTMTE comic art.... Alpha Trion/Minimus aside, Takara's is WAY more accurate to the comic.

They even painted the lightup parts of his kneecaps/shoulder pylons! (Just not in a red light, but a yellow one... fact still is though that they PAINTED IT)

So Ultra Magnus is now Optimus' brother and father?

 

Mixed thoughts about this:

For one: YAY! White guns! That's what I wanted the most!

On other hand: I don't understand why they're including Alpha Trion here instead of Minmus.

 

That's so weird that I kind of love it.

Minimus Ambus is fantastic and his toy reveal was the best thing ever, but now I'm going to have to buy both. Especially for the MTMTE Season 1 accurate Magnus!

Yep, I'll be doing the same thing.

 

Love the colors on Magnus, but why Trion? Why Takara, WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!!?

 

So you corroborated to force me to buy BOTH versions of the toy if I want a fully MTMTE-accurate Magnus?

I haven't double dipped on a Leader Class figures in years ... that trend is ending.
