Boy this list is really bad. Just look at its title:

10 Iconic Anime Mecha: The Machines That Have DEFINED the Genre.

First of all, like others have said, the only actual mecha on here are the VF-1, RX-78-2, and the Zaku-II (also featuring not-a-Zaku). The Gunbuster, Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, and Golion are all Super Robots, and I think Tetsujin-28 can be considered a pioneer of Super Robots. And Transformers are alien robotic lifeforms. So, a much more accurate title would be "10 Iconic Anime Robots".

But then, because Transformers is on the list, the term Anime doesn't work (unless you're talking the Japanese exclusive series). So its "10 Iconic Japanese-designed Robots".

Oh wait, Evangelion's on there as well and those aren't even actual robots. This list utterly FAILS!

Mecha is merely a slang term for robot. All robots are mecha. As has been stated, the only ones on the list that aren't technically mecha, are the EVAs.

The only real problem people have with it is the fact Gundam is on it twice, for no reason.

I can understand why the Zaku is listed separate. The Zaku pioneered grunt mecha and itself isn't a "Gundam".

I really have no problems with this list other than Transformers being on it.

5 pages and not one complain Ideon's lack of present ?

That anime is the only one that
kill all characters (till End of Evangelion) and blew up the whole universe

BTW, I expected that mazinger will top the list, I die a little inside.

Not according to the definition I'm familiar with: "a slang for piloted robots of the real robot genre."

Doesn't matter if that's what you're familiar with. That's not what it means.

And while Evangelion rules itself out on a technicality, the fact of the matter is that the series was designed as a mecha anime, and the EVAs were treated as mecha through most of the show, so they should still count.

The only entry that I really contest on the list is Transformers. Sure, they were popular. But on the Japanese animation front, I wouldn't exactly call them influential. Certainly, there aren't really other animes out there imitating its style and gimmicks, beyond continuations of the series proper.

Gundam spawned the real robot genre, Gunbuster quantified hot-blooded super-robot action (with Getter Robo and Mazinger pioneering it), and Evangelion pushed metaphysical "mind-screw" plots to the forefront, and of course, Tetsujin-28/Gigantor started the whole thing. In contrast, I don't think it could be said that Transformers inspired much movement in the genre at all. Other than perhaps, along with Voltron and Robotech, drawing American audiences into the fold.
