Question/suggestion for Mods

In the same way that I am a "Transformer Geek", my wife is a board game geek. She owns (well, I guess we own, but it's her thing, really...I'm just along for the ride) 45 board games of various natures and nations of origin. She's also a member of a site called, fittingly enough, BoardGameGeek.com.

Here's the cool thing: on that site, a member can search for a game, and when you get to that game's page, you can select that you own it, want it, etc. Then your profile lists the games you own. My wife can then go on and update the calendar of recently played games. Members can also add a game (with pics) to the site if the site didn't have it listed previously. Even better: members can grab a code to add to their MySpace or Facebook pages so that the "owned games" list shows up there.

I think it would be really cool if TFW had something like that. True, it would be a monumental undertaking, but I have faith in the fandom! Besides, at this point, my wife is outgeeking me.

Imagine logging into the 2005 Boards and accessing a list of Transformer figures (like our fantastic resources section), selecting which ones you own, and having other members being able to see a visual list of your collection.

That, friends and neighbors, would be friggin' sweet.

We've pondered a similar feature at times. But there's a few problems. Unlike, say, board games, where you can say "I own Scrabble", people are very specific about which version of which figure they own. People don't just own G1 Prime...They own G1 Prime with bloated fists and gray roller, or they own G1 Prime with blue roller, etc. So it's not an easy thing to implement, especially since there are just so many variants for so many figures.

Then there's no telling what happens when you implement code of that nature into the boards. As many people know, we shoot for the moon with each update to the site, and then after a few weeks we see what works and what kills the speed of the site.

Now I'm not saying this can or will never happen. If it becomes a viable option down the line, and if there is a way to incorporate it into our existing resources, then you never know. If there is one thing that's constant about this site, it's that things can change in the blink of an eye.

I can see how that would be tough...the wife says there are the same issues with the board games, though...she says what they do there, is you search for your game, and when the games comes up, there's a link that says "Browse X# Images." Then you look through the different versions of the games (you'd be amazed by the number of variations, just with something silly like Boggle) until you find the one that matches yours and select it to be the picture in your collection. And if there are no pictures of the one you own, you upload your own pics.

For instance, if you look up Battleship, there are 87 different images. There are different years, languages, knock-offs (Anyone want to play "Batalla Naval?"), travel editions, electronic editions, PC versions, video games, you name it. So I don't think the TF variations would hurt.

Now, none of this is to say TFW has to do anything...I understand the load on the server is hefty already...but it would be cool.

If you do decide to look into doing something of that nature you may want to check out Rebel Scum's wedge engine. That seems like a fairly robust personal collection tracker / d-base for Star Wars.
