This forum seems to have the habit of marking posts as read all by itself. Constantly I stumble on marked-as-read posts from times when I wasn't even anywhere near my computer. It's pretty annoying as this forum is really active and I'm missing out on a lot of posts and discussions. So, what's up? It seems after a bit of Google this might have something to do with the Thread/Forum Read Marking Type option being set to Inactivity/Cookie Based. This basically makes it so that when you're inactive for an amount of time, the forum will be marked as read. This also means that when you leave the forum and people post in this amount of time, if you don't come back before the timer runs out, these posts will be marked as read and you're most likely going to miss them. If this is the case, is there any way the setting might be changed?
If you are removing your cookies and/or logging out when you leave the forum, then the forums may mark those threads as read and reset the next time you log in. Also, if you are logged into multiple devices, and logging out of them at different times, that can cause a discrepancy in the marking of forums as read or not read. May I suggest subscribing to a thread that piques your interest. That way you will get email notifications about posts in those threads (great for sales/trade threads).
I'm not removing my cookies and/or logging out when I leave the forum. Neither do I use multiple devices. Stuff still gets marked as read by itself. I'd rather not use the email notification system, as that's a lot of threads and therefore a lot of emails clogging up my inbox. I'd rather, I don't know, come to the forum to check up on new posts. Except it won't let me, 'cause it thinks I've already read them.
It isn't a perfect system, we've opted away from the database option since we started using this software more than 10 years ago due to the extra stress it applies. We are working on things on the back end here so it's possible we can address this down the road, but not at the moment.
M'alright. New addition to the problem. It seems this also occurs when I visit just the main news page of the website. So it's marking the forum read when I'm not even visiting the forum, but when I'm just checking if there's any new news. Any way around that?
