So following up the Scott McNeil interview I posted, is the Gary Chalk interview! He recently had a nasty spill and tore ligaments n stuff, so we talked to him while he was laid up. Man, the dude has some strong opinions about the 2007 movie! http://www.a3upodcast.com/node/159
Hey thanx for sharing it with all of us. Great & insightful interview btw. a nice guy too (Gary Chalk). My 2nd favorite Prime voice actor & hope dat he gets well soon.
I stopped listening when they started randomly trashing G1. It might not have been the greatest thing to ever grace the television, but a lot of people still like it, and without it, there never would have been a Beast Wars. News flash, guys: Peter Cullen was in all three seasons of the show. He played random one shot characters in season 3.
Cool to hear him talkin voices. It would be AWESOME to hear him as Ultra Magnus in TF2. Neil Kaplan should get cast in there too so we'd have all TF Primes in one movie!
Season 4, Rebirth, actually Slugslinger, Nightstick and Wingspan. Part of Hasbro's HAY LET'S SHOVE IN AS MANY NEW TOYS AS WE CAN FIT offensive on the poor writers of 1987.
I agree that the G1 show sets up the rest of the franchise, but the way I see it, it's still not very good. Now that's just MY opinion. It's like when you revisit things you loved as a kid. Some things just don't hold up. I used to watch Perfect Strangers.... why? Good god why? So I think that when rewatching the G1 series, it becomes obvious that it was just a half hour commercial. That doesn't mean you can't like it! Lloyd Kaufman made an entire career out people loving the bad movies he made! Good for him and good for his fans, but it doesn't have to be my cup of tea. On a similar note, I think that the animated movie still holds up exceptionally well, even though it was just a ploy by Hasbro to make new figures by killing off the old ones. The interview isn't about G1 bashing. I hope you give it another chance.
Can we please not make this thread BW vs. G1? The interview spent like maybe a minute on G1, and he did say GOOD things about it interspersed with other things later on, and it was a pretty far ranging and interesting interview. And ironically they chat about someone, a fellow fan, who I was looking for information on at the same time I was downloading the file. --Moony
thats so wicked that chalk remembers that rupert street store meet up with scott mcneil and mike dobson...what a great night wicked interview guys
This was most likely one of my favorite interviews to date. Gary was really easy to talk to and made this interview a lot of fun to do. While G1 is not top of my lists of great shows, (don't get me wrong, I own all 4 seasons plus 4 different versions of the movie) I really feel that Optimus Primal was the best writen Prime to date and Gary had a lot of good material to work with. "We mussent endanger the humans!" - Optimus Prime "Die cast construction! It's a lot art." - Optimus Primal Spencer. - so who is going to do Gary Chalk's webpage for him?
Great interview indeed! I love Gary Chalk's superb talents. Although seriously, I thought he should have been in the movie. Let's just hope Michael Bay and such would be considerate enough to give Chalk a role for the movie. That would give be more of a incentive to respect him even more. They did have their points about G1, but I still like it. But I also perfer Beast Wars more.
Dear Lord! Perfect Strangers? All right sir! Also, interestingly enough, I think that Gary's voice would be brilliant as an Ultra Magnus in the next movie. Too bad Michael Bay has his head up his ass!
Cool Podcast. I love Gary's work but he sure is bitter about being ignored for the movie. Then again I do remember the Don Murphy/Chalk incident and it did suck.
