    Okay this is simply ridiculous

    Some tool's hacked Allspark AGAIN:banghead:

That makes how many these past 12 weeks? Because honestly so many in such a short space of time leads me to believe it's deliberate and not because of some random worm attack

    Sorry this happened again Kalidor:redface2:

If it is deliberate, God, I don't understand the point. What is to be gained?

I know some people from the allspark post here. Please contact me via PM. I may have found a good, affordable host that could possibly give you hosting with more security than what you have now. It'd depend on what you have now, storage needs, etc., of course.

They sure need something. This is just ridiculous. And I'm sure it's costing them users and money. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. What about fool me dozens of times?

I recall reading that they run their own servers, so if they're not taking care of things on that end, that's the main problem. They'd get better security on any colocation business out there.

And before anyone tells me how tough security is - I know. I work in IT.

There's no excuse to get hacked that many times in such a short span of time.

I take it the plea for cash they sent out earlier either didn't work or the upgrades haven't been done yet.

Instead of getting new equipment, they should spend the $$$ and get someone that knows how to secure a web server. It sounds like the current admin is over his head.

I sympathize. I work in IT too, and this is why I *don't* host my own servers. Whether I COULD create a secure, reliable server is one matter, but the ability rto pay for it is another. It's EXPENSIVE to get the kind of security that stops this stuff. Nevermind if you need customer data to be safe. It's why I lease my space from companies that specialize in it. They have the money and people to build, maintain, and reliably backup a server, and to afford the software, hardware, and specialists to keep it reasonably safe.

Well, this hack came only days after Kalidor had a mass-banning of people he didn't like who were talking trash about him and the Allspark on another messageboard. The action caused X-Warlock to step down, I believe.

So the hack may or may not be a reaction from one of the banned parties, but circumstantial evidence would seem to point in that direction.

I completely disagree with such attacks, but the Allspark DOES often have a polarizing effect on people that could lead the immature and easily aggressed to do such a thing....

Well...just too clear up a couple things.

1: Kal didnt ban anyone. Two prominent staffers stepped down all by themselves over a disagreement. Kal was sad too see them walk away btw. One of the ones that stepped down had a lot of tech skills and was in charge of tech, and maybe thats some of the reason for this breach in security.

2: No system is EVER secure enough to withstand a true hacker with good enough skills. Those who honestly belive that its systems out there thats 100% secure doenst know what they are talking about. Period.

3: Theres plenty of good reasons to run the servers by your own. One is too have better control of whats happening software and hardware wise, logs and such. Thats just one reason.

4: I work in IT as well, and while I agree with the other IT people thats saying its important to have good enough skills when admining servers like this, I am pretty confident in Kal's and X-Warlock abilities. Kal has also used, and payed for, outside expertice from time to time. On the other hand....I know a little bit of what systems and setup Kal is using, and I just might suggest to transfer to something else in the future.

5: Kal summed up a good chunk of money out of all the donations me thinks, and he and X-Warlock spent a lot of it on upgrades. Note that Kal and other staffers has spent lots of money out of their own pocket for a long while. So this donate matter was a new thing.

6: Yea, we come to boards like this when/beacuse the spark is down....that doesnt mean that we wont come back to the spark when its up again. Sure, from time to time some people come here or other places and leaves the spark...but let me tell you that the spark has a lot of people that left this place and decided to stay at the spark instead. But its all a matter of personal taste I guess.

7: Some of you people are quite....well, in lack of a better word; a little hostile towards the spark me thinks. Be that your own choice, but know that such attitudes will just fall back on you and wont make this board seem any better or mature than what you accuse the spark for being. Which is sad, because both TFW2005 and The Allspark is some fine sites/forums that is of outmost importance in the fandom, if you ask me. Just my 2 cents.
