I know this really isn't a custom in the same sense as some of the other works of art I see here in the Radicons section of TFW2005.com, but I wanted to share it nonetheless, and it just felt right posting it here.

For Christmas, my in-laws purchased a red sofa/loveseat/armchair set, and just didn't have the room for all three pieces. After testing some configurations, they decided to keep the sofa and armchair, and gave my wife and I the loveseat. We live in a pretty small apartment, and they though it would be a nice addition to our spare room which effectively serves as my man-cave. I wasn't so keen on it at first, but I decided to do something cool with it after my wife forced me to put a blanket on top to protect it from typical guy wear and tear.

So here's the couch as we received it:

Don't mind my little cat buddy...his name is Orion Pax Prime, so he's worthy of being in the man-cave.

Anyway, this is the black blanket my wife forced on me that got me thinking:

So, I set out on quest to Ikea, Walmart, and finally Target, and found some of the supplies I'll need to get this baby turned into something more respectable.

I found a nice blue blanket and two gray pillows more worthy of a Prime:

Keep in mind this is still a work in progress, as I'm going to locate two iron-on Autobot Symbols for each of the pillows, and I'd really like to get some flames added to the blue blanket like the movie version of Optimus Prime...I just need to find some kind of stencil, and someone willing to sew the flames onto the blanket. So if you guys have any ideas, please let me know.

Here's another shot with Orion Pax Prime giving it the seal of approval:

    Just for you:

Those comics are by my favorite artists Joe Madureira and Adi Granov, and all of them were autographed at various comic conventions. I'd like to get Don Figueroa, Alex Milne, and James Roberts to autograph some comics for the lower level closer to the couch...but they seem to be a bit tougher!

In terms of the cat, it's actually a pretty heart-warming tale. We found him at the humane league and his name was already Orion. I wanted him right from the get-go, but my wife didn't cause her mother had warned her against boy cats. So we initially passed him up.

We went back a few days later and he was gone. I was depressed for about 3 weeks, cause he was just a nice cat. His name was Orion, he was gray, and had a little white patch on his chest that I called his matrix, hahaha...what more could you look for in a pet?

Anyway, time passed, and we went back about three weeks later, and there he was again! I asked if he was adopted and returned, and it turns out he just had a cold so they kept him secluded from the other cats. Needless to say, it was an act of Primus, and I adopted him on the spot, hahaha.

Don't do anything crazy on there. One second you're watching TV, and next thing you know you're making out with the Prime.

Trust me, a kiss can go a long way.

Nice couch! The Autobot cushions they released for the 2007 movie might actually go quite well with it.

finding autobot symbols online is pretty easy, just do a google search. Find as large an image as you can and print out at the size you want. Then carefully cut out the solid parts so that you have a stencil and tape extra paper around the edges. Tape the mask/stencil onto your pillows so they won't move around. Try to get them as flat as you can without any gaps or areas where the mask pops up. I recommend taking the stuffing out and inserting a cardboard backer. Then use fabric spray paint to spray your design onto the pillows. You could go w/ a solid emblem or even use multiple colors to get a gradient / G1 look.

I recommend using the paints over an iron on as those will crack, flake, and just look nasty over time and use.

the same ideas can be applied to your flames.

To REALLY make your designs "pop", after painting and letting dry, go over the edges with a 1/8" zig-zag stitch set to a minimal stitch length. This will give the final design an embroidered/patch quality as well as make for a more professional looking product. Just make sure that you don't sew the front and back of your pillow together or you'll never get your stuffing back in.

You can find fabric paints here:
Simply Spray Fabric Paint for Upholstery Carpets Clothing even Fabric Lamp Shades.

and sometimes at shops like Joanne's, Micheal's, and A.C.Moore but the spray paints are getting harder to find.

Good luck, I look forward to your progress :)

The next couch you make, make it so that you take the pillows and have a FORTRESS MAXIMUS!

By the way, this should be a spotlight :)

I have 2 of the same gray kitties.

I got something else in the works too! It's nothing major, but a little custom I wanted to make for myself. It's taking a bit longer because I have to paint at a friend's house, so it's a matter of scheduling now.

Big thank you to everyone for all the couch humor, and comments! I thought everyone in the Radicons could use something a little different. Can't wait to get this couch "Primed" and ready. I am going to try to enlist my mother for the sewing portion tonight, and then it's just a matter of making a stencil and cutting out some awesome flames.

Neat but it probably stinks of cat.

Need headlight patches to sew onto the front of the arm rests.
