    FOC Onslaught Upgrade Kit

Update 02-05-13: Hinge Blaster (v1.5) available separately

I have released the newest version of the Hinge Blaster separately on Shapeways. For those who have the original kit, the new blaster is optional. The new design was made to be more durable, but the original model is still more than durable enough to function as intended.

As has been the case since the 24th of May, all FOC Onslaught Upgrade Kits are currently produced with the new Hinge Blaster design.

The new Hinge Blaster is available separately here:

Thanks for the continued support with this kit everyone! :)

    Changes:
    • New Hinge Blaster barrel design
    • Increased diameter for increased strength

Thanks to everyone for the feedback on this kit!

The Hinge Blaster has been redesigned and features a new barrel, to allow it to function better as a hinge in Onslaught's vehicle mode.

A common problem with FOC Onslaught is for the green blaster he comes packaged with to get stressed. The connections on his vehicle mode (to his arm) force the plastic further than it can take. That, and let's face it:

Onslaught isn't Onslaught without twin huge cannons!

The FOC Onslaught Upgrade Kit provides fixes to both these issues. A new Hinge Blaster and two Hinges relieve plastic stress with a new attachment point while Twin Cannons provide the firepower and silhouette Onslaught deserves.

In robot mode, Onslaught gets a new pistol and two shoulder-mounted cannons, surprisingly not from Swindle!

Twin Cannons mount on Onslaught using the combiner ports on his shoulders. They can also be handheld using the 5mm pegs.

Onslaught transforms into Combiner Torso mode, keeping both hinges on him. The Twin Cannons stack with his green blaster on his back for more firepower, and even the Hinge Blaster stows on the back!

But, why is it called a Hinge Blaster? And why the two superfluous Hinges on Onslaught's legs?

In Vehicle Mode, Onslaught takes his new Hinge Blaster and turns it into a new attachment point for the green blaster!

The 5mm peg hole lets the green blaster attach to the back, right between the Hinges! No more stressed plastic, no more attaching to those two fiddly pages on his arms.

(And yes, other 5mm weapons can be attached as well)

And in the spirit of Hinge Blasters everywhere, Onslaught finally doesn't aim downwards anymore! Unlike the original connection, which left the gun pointing at the ground, the new connection lets Onslaught aim up, up, up!

The Hinge rotates through 360 degrees itself, only blocked by the vehicle itself and the ground, so Onslaught can aim all the way back at cars behind him if he wants.

When it comes to war, though, more weapons is always better! Arm Onslaught with his full complement of weapons and roll into battle!

Onslaught's Twin Cannons plug into the 5mm holes on the hinge pieces, above the Hinge Blaster. Other 5mm weapons can be attached here as well.

Very nicely done, this is a very cleverly designed kit!

The parts are all very aesthetically pleasing too.

    Great job!

Looks awesome! The barrel on the Hinge Blaster seems quite thin, though, especially between the ribs on the barrel. The Shapeways sturdy plastic has been good to me so far, but I'm worried about this one because it's going to be stressed rotationally as well as longitudinally. Guess I'll find out when I order mine!

Oh man, I have been wanting an upgrade kit for Onslaught since the day I got him. Unfortunately this doesn't scratch my need. I think you've made some really cool weapons for him and their effect in vehicle mode is definitely a plus.

But I have a few issues with Onslaught that I need an upgrade kit to fix for me to consider it. First off it has to do something about his arms. His arms suck right now. If some new upper arms could be made, perhaps using the combiner plugs, then I would be very interested. That crotch plate also is an issue, but I'm not sure specifically how to fix it. His gun needs a way to store on his back in robot mode. Resting it there isn't a good solution. And my final issue is the only bullet point your kit addresses. His vehicle mode needs something to fill out the back end of it.

I don't mean to sound negative so I apologize if I am coming off that way. These guns you've made look really cool and they store in vehicle mode rather nicely. But a couple cool guns doesn't fix the issues I have with the figure.

Thanks wwoptimusprime. Onslaught's a cool figure, worth it for Bruticus. Now if only I had the money for all five! (I only have Brawl and Onslaught so far... :(  )

    Thanks Molina00! :)

Gotta say I agree with you SG Hailstorm. The new position of the Hinge Blaster really grabs attention. I just find most of my figures who stare at it too long have a habit of needing a medic! :lol

First time for everything! :D  Thanks for the kind words MegaHavok.

Thanks, glad to hear it phoenixliger. :)

    Always appreciate it D/L. :thumb

    :)  Thank you cheetor71.

Hmm...the link works for me. I've not seen any server issues with Shapeways recently. Weird.

Thanks for the kind words though. :)

    :rolleyes2  As if that wasn't already well-established...

    :lol

    Thanks knockoff! :)

    Decent?

    DECENT??? :(  :(  :(

:lol  Good to know at least it improves the vehicle mode somewhat!

Good point 9.8m/s^2. I did check that part on my sample when I got it. Can't say I wasn't at least slightly concerned the first time I twisted it, but after only a few uses the grip loosened enough, and now I can rotate the gun with little worry at all.

The ends of the gun are also cut (the rear end is a 3mm clip, the gun barrel's actually got part of the barrel bored into the design). That leaves the plastic room to move, which further lessens the stress on the gun in my experience.

Knowing that, I have no concerns with my WSF print. :)

No problem Ryoku. Can't say I'm amazed with the Onslaught figure either. It's a neat figure, but I have to agree some of the design choices are just downright horrible. Though I give some allowance for Bruticus' needs, I agree the arms are a bit awkward.

That said, I think my kit fixes most of the issues with the figure. Filling out the back of the vehicle mode was definitely a priority (without it, this may as well be FOC Kup, not Onslaught), but the kit also addresses the need for Onslaught to have two cannons in robot mode pointing up. While the shoulder-mounted Cannons obviously take some artistic license to the concept of "cannons aiming upwards", it at least gives Onslaught the cannon-dominated silhouette he deserves.

As for the arms, good luck with finding a replacement for those and let me know when you do. This kit was made to be completely modification free (no mods, not even reversible ones were allowed) and as such I left the arms out of the firing line.

That said, thanks for the input Ryoku. :)
