So yeah, I'm sure we'll get this officially sometime in the future from either Hasbro or TT, but I wanted one now! Skywarp's actually a little more than a straight repaint, I ended up using a number of Wal-Mart Skywarp bits on this one, mostly to avoid paint scraping. I used his knee joints, elbow joints, shoulder joints, thighs, hands, and the main wings nearly in their entirety including the back panels they're connected to and the hinges (yes the old, non-breakaway-safely ones). These parts were repainted to match, but should any paint chipping happen, there's a near-identical color underneath. Plus, I really wanted to keep the wing stripes from the Hasbro version since they were so beautifully painted on. The rest of the parts are Hasbro's Thundercracker. For the color scheme, I wanted to go cartoon accurate (for the most part) to match Starscream and Thundercracker (after I made some adjustments to him as well.) Tamiya Metallic black was used for the main color, as well as Semi-gloss black for the thighs, joints, and other robot bits. The grey is a custom silvery grey, while the purple is a custom mix of Tamiya Purple and MM silver, its got a lot of metal flake not quite seen in the pics. I wanted the Decepticon logos to be decals, to have the painted on look, but I wanted a silver border...and of course my inkjet can't print silver. So i sprayed some decal paper with some MM Silver, and then printed the 'Con logos on clear decal paper. After that, I just cut the silver painted decal paper to shape, applied it, and then applied the clear logo on top, worked excellent! Anyway, onto the pics!
Meanwhile that's my favorite part! So pretty. Damn you for making me want this so badly. I can't paint that well and he's not coming to stores for a while, if ever!
Gawd DAMN that looks fantastic! Clean enough that it looks official for crying out loud. Very well done.
Blasphemer, haha! Gloss for me all the way...sometimes semi-gloss if I feel it suits the piece, but I love a nice smooth, shiny surface. Thanks guys! I'm really proud of the finish on this thing, came out very smooth and even.
Wow!That's badass! You painted those stripes on?! Do you happen to wet sand any of the colors at anytime during this process?
This really highlights how weird the "hotpants" look is on Hasbro's, and how simple it is to make it look right---have the entire thigh the same color!
I really like this and was thinking about repainting my mp06 purple shoulders, feet nullrays and now you've made me defo wanna do it! Awesome.
This is amazing! Such a smooth clean paint job it does look official. I never would have guessed it was a repaint. He looks awesome all glossy and metallic too.
The ones on the tail wings, yes. The main wing stripes were masked off from the Hasbro wings. Yep, repainting those on Thundercracker are on my near future to-do list, just keep forgetting to pick up the metallic blue I want.... Yep, I knew from the start I wanted the purple shoulders and Nullrays, and I'm glad I went with it.
This looks GORGEOUS. Looks just like an official release (And I mean that in a good way ), and the cleanliness overall is spectacular. If I were out of the loop for a while and saw pictures of this I would have assumed Takara had gone and made a Masterpiece Skywarp.
