    EDIT: Latest Update

Apologies in advance for the terrible pics... my phone doesn't deal well with anything but natural light.

Last year or the year before, when the DotM toys were fresh on the shelves, Roadbuster caught my eye. Between his car mode and his fairly "neutral" robot mode, I didn't think he'd look jarringly out of place with a new coat of paint and a new head with my "Classics" toys, it was just a matter of whom to do him up as. Eventually, I decided to go for Jackpot, since I have fond memories of the Actionmaster (which I foolishly traded on ATT:M in my youth). Absolutely stupendous amounts of "real life" drama over the last year or two have meant that it's only now I've been able to pick him up and look at him again to start work.

His new head was made from one of the RiD trainbots (who I have two of spare for some reason. No clue why) with a sculpted visor, shaved-down chin, and a newly-added socket to fit the neck ball from Roadbuster. The idea was to dye all the appropriate parts (including the entire car exterior) black, so as to avoid paint wear when transforming him, since he's a bit of a Movie Shellformer.

    Everything was going okay until...

    Basically, I'm not very good at dying parts. They tend to either end up not deeply enough coloured, or... melty. Originally he was the first extreme, so I decided to try and dye his parts again the next day, only to end up with the latter. One hasty order on ebay later (incidentally, Kapow! toys AKA toy_jedi gave nothing but excellent customer service when there was a problem with my purchase) and I had the following;

The head and crotch thankfully never deformed, and I managed to save the dyed legs by forcing the warped parts back into shape using the various screw connections. The current plan is to paint only the outside of the vehicle mode black, so as to avoid paint chipping during transformation, and then add yellow highlights to certain areas. The original toy's mostly black and yellow, I admit, but there's orange as a spot colour, so I don't think a heavily black/orange colour scheme will look too unnatural. I'm not torn on whether or not I want to replace the original decals with something, but I am quite inclined to paint the current white trim areas in with yellow, to contrast the black. And after a request from someone on another forum, I'm probably going to recast the head, not least of all because I want another one to stick on Animated Prowl or some similar bike to make a Classics Rad. :D

Oh, and you can bet your ass that there will be some kind of Minicon Targetmaster incarnation of Sights. Couldn't bring myself to mod my G1 one.

    That head is awesome!

There are plenty of black NASCAR Chevys out there - Kevin Harvick occasionally runs one, and Ryan Newman runs them regularly, if you want to stick to a "real world" scheme...

    Thanks a lot guys!

Hooper X - Thanks for the advice... I know absolutely nothing about NASCAR besides "turn left lots", living in the UK. :)  I will look up those colour schemes and see how they look...

Found some ludicrously cheap Halo minifigs, and found that the joints are the same as legends/cyberverse toys, and a bunch of mini-cons to boot. These are prototypes for Sights, Rad's partner Lionizer, and Skyfall's partner Top-heavy.

Hmm. Some good news and some bad news this morning, pardon the poor light, it's really overcast here today...

So, Sights is turning out okay. Just need something to put on the end of the wings. Tempted to cut the balljoints off and replace them with some kind of small weapon barrel, but it seems like a waste. Thanks to the minifig clip-hands, he even attaches as a backpack-mounted weapon to the missile launcher! He doesn't hang well from the underarm rail mounts though.

The problem comes from the fact that the dying accident warped the legs more than I thought... the car mode doesn't fit together well at all now, so either I have to risk dying my unwarped legs, or painting them and enduring endless paint wear.

Also, have a preview of Rad's Lionizer, in the hands of my soon-to-be-G2 Jetstorm.

Fairly big update, though it might not look it... I managed to get the legs to fit in car mode!

I actually managed to get everything to click a bit better after this pic was taken, but I am happy with it, now. I shaved away the part that holds the shoulders on, as well as some excess parts of the feet, and finally cut away most of the knee pads, and the warped legs now fit more or less as they should in car mode.

Don't think it's affected the robot mode too much. I'd be almost tempted to leave the car mode orange and just to yellow/red paint apps at this point, if it wouldn't bother me on principle. :p

Also, took another shot at dying the (unwarped) legs... and while the test parts I used a slightly different technique on worked perfectly, these guys were slagged... arrrrgh. AND they only came out a navy blue.

Now all they need are some paint!

If you need designs for NASCAR paint schemes I have a bunch saved to Photobucket. I'd recommend this one:

Thanks, that's very helpful! I think one of the other ones I saw had a bit more red though, which is tempting. The problem is getting accurate decals.

I know you can get good decals from this site: Pattos Place Slot Cars & Decals I plan to use that site when I start my NASCAR TransFormers customs, I don't know what scale you should use though...

Slot car decals should be 1/32, which is perfect for this. :)  Thankyou!

No problem! :)  Also, I'd suggest using a Nationwide series car.(Like the one I just posted) Roadbuster's paint scheme is based on a Sprint Cup car (the #10 and #14 in my signature), but his physical design is Nationwide series Impala (the #7 and #33 cars in my signature). The decals will fit better for a Nationwide car.  Hope this made sense and helps! :)

http://www.pattosplace.com/decals/7-Tssot-2012-32.jpg I think this is the right set? Not sure how much I like the fact that they're all printed against black... I was hoping for waterslides but I guess beggars can't be choosers. I will find a way of making them fit the actual car though... spending money on reshelling a car mode that I'm finally happy with is probably pushing this more than I want to. ;)  Thanks again!

I think those are the ones! You shouldn't have to reshell or try too much to make them fit; the #7 car you're using is Nationwide series, just like Roadbuster's physical design. Glad I could help you! :)

Perfect. :D  That's my order placed, maybe you should ask for a finder's fee when you make yours! ;)

Ah, little joke. :)  A finder's fee is money someone pays you for being a middleman more or less, akin to sales commission.

Oh! :lol  Yeah, hopefully I'll start my first NASCAR custom soon. I'll actually be using the same car as you, #7, but I'm doing the St. Patrick's Day scheme, like the one in my signature! :D
