<Edit - 2014> Classics Downshift and Camshaft are also complete. Group shots here: http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/radicons-customs/988345-classics-omnibot-camshaft.html#post11213036 "Yeah, I'm back. Don't pretend you didn't miss me." - Overdrive Hey folks. I started working on my second custom ever -- Classics Overdrive -- following the completion of Classics Downshift. He's to the point where I feel I can post some pictures, but he's certainly not done. It's mostly just a repaint at this point, plus the obvious removal of the horns from the Jazz head. I was kind of amazed that no one else has done this yet as the Jazz head and figure in general seem tailor-made for an update to Overdrive. My biggest question at this point is on painting the windows. I'm not crazy about the look in general, but I'm also not crazy about light blue windows on a red car. I'm hoping the paint will look like the TFTM07 "premium" line. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Lastly, sorry for the super craptastic cell phone images. He'll be in the lightbox as soon as he's finished, cleaned up, and can tolerate the scrutiny. <edit> 3/17 Done! Pics updated.
Looks really good....if I had your patience, I would be done with all my projects but this looks really nice...keep up the good work...
Cool! And you're right... the head is a great match for Overdrive! 2 comments though... - What about painting the front and side-skirts black? I think it would help break up the red a bit, and better match the colour blocking on the original Overdrive. - I don't know if this would work, but maybe you could just paint the interior of the windows black, and that would be enough to knock the blue down enough that it doesn't fight with the red of the body so much. That way you wouldn't have to be quite as precise, and you could keep the sheen of the outer window plastic. zmog
very cool take!!! i like your mold choice, and like smog said, damn near bang on to the character. for suggestions, can you possibly spray-tint the windows black? agin, nice mold choice!!
Looks good! I'm surprised at how good the Jazz head looks with the horns removed. Seems like the Omnibots are really popular kitbash material right now!
...and although I have a couple of possible interpretations in mind, ideas are always welcome. That's what I said! I had actually thought about that. Right now I'd say I'm 50/50 on doing it, but it's going to depend on how he feels in vehicle mode. I think the 'bot mode will be OK once I get the headlights painted in, but the car will still be very, very red. I'm attaching some pics I found of a Porshe colored that way, and if I do it I might stick with their charcoal grey to give it a little definition from the black I've already done on the front. Has anyone actually done the inside of the windows as you describe? I'm tempted to try it on one of the side windows. If it looks like crap I can clean it up, or leave them off as the original had no side windows. Quite honestly what I'd love is to be able to BUY these figures (Classics Omnibots) next year as part of a Botcon set or as the 2 exclusives and freebie. Although Overdrive looks great with the horns removed and not much like "red Jazz", he'd be passable if Fun Pub had to use their remolded heads elsewhere. Also, I doubt that I'll do it but the fold out clip points on his windows are a super obvious and easy place to add in some custom G1-style fold-out wings!
it'd actually be pretty simple.the only drawback is because it's behind the glass instead of infront of it,it would still have a slight blue tint to it.it'll be waaaay darker, but still have a bit of a blue-ish tint. instead of paying full price for a can of spray tint, why not try actual window tint? as long as you're somewhat confident with an exacto knife or olfa blade, some small scraps of window tint and you should be good to go too. and because it's pretty much a vinyl,if you don't like it you can simply heat it a bit and peel it right off. try a local automotive autobody/custom/aftermarket shop.they usually have tons of scraps they may give you. hope that helps
I just KNEW this would come to life once the detail started popping out on the car! This looks really awesome! I'm already getting anxious for the 3rd guy in the group!
Excellent re-use of the Jazz mold into the classic mail-away character. This is great inspiration of what I could do with my extra RTS Jazz. Superb work on both of them so far.
yes that TOTALLY works ! I did it on my ROTF deluxe sideswipe and yes skirts and grill black would look good maybe even added bulk to the "helmet" part of the head to differ it from Jazz
Progress! Slow going, but I'm hoping to be done by this weekend. Larger headlights painted, abdomen painted, translucent windows painted (on the inside, as recommended), rear window painted, and brake lights painted. More slop also created to clean up later.
I really like this Idea and I have a spare jazz body, I might just steal this idea from you! Looks like its going very well, cant wait to see it finished.
