The moment I saw pictures of Prime Wheeljack I knew what must be done. I present to you Burnout Version 4. (Burnout is my custom character FYI) Also, RIP Rumble Thugger whose leg broke while shooting these pictures. He will never transform again... The set up didn't work quite as well as I had hoped. I kept struggling to find an angle to shoot that would show off what was going on and Burnout at the same time. Oh well.
Damn that guy looks siiick. Don't know much about Burnout, but he reminds me of the club exclusive SG Drift. Love your city scene too!
The Drift head loooks pretty good on that Prime WJ body... does it fit in the transformation easily? zmog
I had to do some surgery on the Wheeljack body to get the head onto it. For the transformation it isn't quite as solid as Wheeljack but it's 98%. The hands and the head compete for space but that's made easier by tilting the head down as far as it will go. It's not bad at all just a little more work than Wheeljack.
He looks great! The only minor critique is the paint looks a little thick. It does have a nice shine to it though. The head looks cool.
Really? I'm not sure how I could make it look thinner. Had I not used as many layers as I did they underlying white would have been seen. And the gold had a similar problem.
You did this with brushes, right? I find spray paints give a much smoother finish, though you have to be more careful with your set-up. zmog
Thanks, deliciouspeter. Yeah SMOG, this was dry brushed. I'm not a huge fan of spray paint because it doesn't give me the fine control dry brushing does. But I don't think it would have been possible with this figure. Wheeljack isn't really able to be taken apart for painting. Or at least that is beyond my skill. He has pretty much all pin joints that I can't detach. It was a little annoying.
You know ... The PRiD Wheeljack was a such a pass for me. Yet, seen here, such bueaty, such grace, such artistry. The alt mode looks so much better with than it does for the original character. Of coarse I'm not fond of Prime "jacky" ugh .... but I degress, Burnout looks awesome here. you should be proud. Now I'm itching for my comp to get fixed so I can share my finalized project. I know I'm new to this, but I read somewhere if you water down the paint a bit, using a wet brush, that can make it smoother. But I'm not 1000% on that but might be worth looking into. Do you use same red every time? Lastly, I think Testors Model Paint worked quite well, and was a decient price. I found it in "Michael's" art supply store.
It does look good but I agree with Solrac333 that the paint looks a little thick. Overall still a nice job.
I usually don't like made up characters, but this is really damn nice. The gold and red pop on the bad boy.
I'm glad people are liking this. I'm always self conscious about posting this stuff. It's never as good as what other people make. Thanks everyone. I'm not sure how to solve that then. If I had any less paint on the brush when I used it practically nothing would happen and it would take 10+ coats to coat it completely.
Like the custom and your setup...I'm also jealous of your FE figures Is ironic Prime Wheeljack is basically Drift and your character uses Drift Head. That's cool.
It maybe the type of paint you use. There is much thicker and thinner paints. I do not paint myself, but a friend of mine does and he was telling me on a custom he did what paints he used and how thin they were. Mentioned, he usually does 2 or 3 layers to get it where he wants.
I know what you mean... I hate it when everything is pinned, making it pretty awkward to disassemble for things like painting. However, I remember Frenzy/Rumble saying a while back that he doesn't usually bother with disassembling the figures he uses... just hits 'em with a good spray of primer, and goes to work. Perhaps a spray primer would allow you to get better coverage with fewer layers of paint? Not that I think it's a big deal... this looks pretty good, but since people were talking about ways of getting a thinner application, I figured I'd throw some ideas out there. zmog
^Yeah a base prime would be better, if you have access to a Gamesworkshop, pick up Mechrite Red,its a triple pigment base coat for Reds. You can do thin successive top coats, but less of them, hit it with some 1000 grit sandpaper and glosscoat it with future finish to seal him. Wheeljack comes apart just enough to get at most of the bad rub joints. Btw,i love the character, I'm turning one of my extra Wj's into Hotrod
