Just got my Purrdator in the mail (along with some TFP Wheeljack blasters, my first Shapeways order), he looks amazing! FUD really captures the detail flawlessly. Makes me wish my next order in the pipeline---with a Smashmaster Seismus and some Whirl claws--wasn't in WSF. Though I guess I'll have made up my mind on it when it's actually in my hands. Can't wait to start painting and putting it together--does anyone recommend painting BEFORE assembly? or is the FUD reliable enough to be assembled and disassembled (with extreme care, of course?) Amazing work, Fakebusker83!
*Sigh* So, a moment of silence for my first FUD Purrdator...after taking the time to separate pieces and prep them for assembly, I bafflingly managed to crack apart all four shoulder/hip sockets while trying to attach them to the main body. I'm not sure how much of this was a tolerance of the material/not using the proper technique for assembly/pure hamhandedness on my part, but still...Grah. To make matters worse, when testing the head/neck articulation for transformation to storage mode, I snapped the neck stem off....and, when I tried to reglue, didn't think to try to dig the ball out of the socket first...and so, the neck was rendered immovable. *bangs head against desk* Gah. Though these mistakes are all my own, I will mention--as Fakebusker83, you said you encourage feedback--that the pointed front edge of the torso (directly under the neck ball stem) made rotating the neck/head pieces around for transformation difficult. It scrapes the back of the neck piece, and puts stress on the neck stem. This may have contributed to mine breaking. Whether this is worth making a revision, I can't say...maybe I'm the only one who had that issue. That rant of my incompetence aside, I still like the awesome work you've been doing, Fakebusker83, and this doesn't change the fact that you've got future business from me for sure...but I'm definitely getting my next Not-Ravage in WSF or WSFP. Gah.
*ouch* I'm sorry to hear about your experience. You said 'prepped for assembly', I assumed you painted the ball joints before trying to install them? Normally that shouldn't be a problem. I've flattened the front face of the torso to remove that pointed edge you mentioned. The scraping problem should be no more. This sounds like a real bad misadventure with the material dude, but I hope it's just a really bad first time experience. Now you should be more familiar with how the material behaves. Future models shouldn't be a problem.
Yeah, I'm hoping this just a first-time-out-of-the-Shapeways kerfluffle for me--though I'm going to be hesitant with ordering FUD for now until I get the hang of things in general. I had painted the ball joints before assembly....the problem I had was finding the widest section of the socket to insert the ball into. I'll post pics from the next batch I get for sure--no sense using Flickr for pieces!
I just assembled my Purr-dator in BSF. I had no troubles with the model in this format, went together flawlessly and all the ball joints are tight but mobile. No sanding or glue had to be added. And I had absolutely no idea how bad a model this small would hurt my hands to construct. Ouch, it's like being in Ceramics 100 all over again...
I have to know, how strong/detailed are the stuff you make on Shapeways? The white examples don't look too good, a bit on the rough side...
It's true. They are kinda rough. But at that scale you won't notice the powder. Besides, after proper paint applications the texture can be hidden quite well. For Shapeways it's all about choosing the right material and compromise. White Strong Flexible = very strong, very flexible, but rough Frosted Ultra Detail = very detailed, but snaps under pressure There's no perfect material in existence yet, unless Shapeways is able to print ABS. I too, will be all over it in a second.
man shapeways is taking so long i was suppose to recieve mine on 25 of april i even made a complaint to them and yet no reply
Well, relax...it's just 3 working days since then, and some materials do have a backlog, like FUD. Have you gotten a tracking code yet?
Preview of upcoming SG Ravage Day on my Youtube Channel featuring none other than SG Purrdator among other SG Ravage friends; Paint job courtesy of Peagis here on the forums.
As promised the video update (which includes normal and future SG Ravages as well); Shattered Glass Ravage Day! SG Ravage Multi - Reviews! - YouTube Peagis did a great job on these with all the fine details and panel lining. Definitely a highlight in the collection.
It's true, P is a robot no doubt about it. He had me do him replacement noses and ears on Shapeways. Punch the next guy you see with 'FB83' on his nose or ears, lest the robots take over the planet! I envyenvyenvy your cat collection sir. Thanks for doing the review! I still can't get over the pink ears and nose. It's so adorablecute!
Just received my order (of all the minions) today! This one was by far the easiest to assemble! Except, it came without a tail! The Shapeways site doesn't say anything about missing pieces either. Are they able to replace certain parts, or would I have to buy another one just to get the tail that they did not send?
Hi GG, you can approach Shapeways customer service directly about this issue. You can use the graphic attached to tell them about the missing piece and they should be able to help you get another one. Sorry to hear you have issues with the print. I hope they can resolve it soon!
