ROTF Leader Optimus Prime knuckle hands Revision 1.5

    Hi guys,

I'd like to herald my most ambitious project to date, leader Optimus Prime's knuckle hands! This one took me a pretty long time to create, as I invested a lot of time cramming in all the details, making it as movie accurate as possible and also the folding mechanism. Alas, Shapeways Strong Flexible material is not ideal in showing all the details, but I'll be getting a sample in Frosted Ultra Detail to see how well that will turn out.

Like all my other hand designs, the wrists, thumbs are ball-jointed, the fingers are doubly ball-jointed, and the knuckle mechanism as well. Yes, the back panels of the fists hinge out to reveal a set of vicious looking knuckle spikes to lay the smack down on the errant Decepticon!

Yes, they fit in alt mode perfectly.

You can purchase the hands here at
ROTF leader class Optimus Prime knuckle hands 1.5.

    Assembly Instructions

Putting these hands together is not as simple as the others, so I prepared a cheat sheet for you guys. The knuckle pieces are not symmetrical, so be careful to use the pieces on the correct sides.

    Disclaimer

The sample in the photos is version 1.0. The sample I got had extremely loose joints which necessitate the use super glue. It might just a bad print, cuz my other hand prints alternate between tight and loose as well. To stay on the safe side, I've updated the CAD to version 1.5 with thicker joint walls and sturdier joints. Unfortunately, you might run the risk of having overly tight joints now. If that happens, shave some material off with an x-acto blade.

    As always, buyer beware.

Comments, critiques and feedback on problems faced will be very much appreciated!

    Regards,
    Ariel

Man. I've been waiting for these so long! So, is the strong/flexible going to be okay to order these in? Like, is it more of a display piece, or do you think these pieces will hold up to play as well as your other hands?

    God. So good.

Oh yeesssss... Strong Flexible will be best for these hands. In regards to holding up during play, I have not obtained the latest sample yet, but the knuckle mechanism might be fragile because of their smaller joint size. Really, don't go punching anything with them!

I have an idea for the next revision. Could you make the backs of the hands split in 1/2 instead of in 1/4? If you could, then they could close when the knuckles are out. Just an idea :)

It beats me why there are still people without a leader Optimus in hand or in a readily accessible display. That mold is like the BEST EVAR...

HFTD voyager Prime may have too small a pair of hands to incorporate those joints in, unfortunately

Thanks for the love guys :)
Now go get those hands and make some awesome Prime customs! (I'm looking at YOU, Mr. E!)

One can only hope. I'm still waiting for my leader Blackout :(

The busker wants something for Christmas hehe

Thanks A! I do have a few more crazy ideas up my sleeve, we'd see in a couple of weeks...

    I will take your money!

I tried it and nope! it doesn't work. Splitting in 2 pieces was my original plan but it needs the back plates to cover over the spikes, which means the hands will be thicker about 2 mm and the proportion will look even worse than what it is now. Having the spikes be part of the back plate streamlines the silhouette somewhat.

By right it should. The handle hole is the same as the one in my original OP hand so if it works there, it should work here.
Those who receive the hands finally can help me test it though. I've yet to find a Buster Prime :(
