7-21-11 Update: Trailer with RotF leader Optimus Prime, post 8.

I bought the original MP Convoy that came with a cardboard trailer. I considered buying one of the 3rd party trailers when they were coming out, but I didn't want to pay the asking price. I never cared much for the base mode, so that wasn't an issue for me...

One day I saw a toy truck and car set (pictured) at Target for about $5. I ended up buying two, one to keep the trailer as is, and one to modify. As you can see in the pics, the trailer works really well with MP Prime (and Ultra Magnus) and alternator scale toys.

I cut down the plastic trailer and taped it up as needed so I could encase it in the cardboard trailer. I cut the bottom off the cardboard trailer and taped it onto the hacked up plastic one. I also taped on some of the parts from the bottom of the cardboard trailer.
Now the trailer is much sturdier and, more important, has working wheels! (Unfortunately, cars are unable to go inside...)

Wow that trailer is scaled just right, great find! Are you gonna make the tailgate drop later? Might use paperclips or something for the hinges :)

No, I don't think so. At the time I considered leaving it openable (is that a word? :)  ) but for some reason I don't remember decided to seal it. It would have been nice for storing his accessories, so I'm thinking there was some structural reason why I taped it shut...

Trailer with RotF leader Optimus Prime

With Optimus having a trailer in DotM, I wanted to give my leader Prime a trailer. I figured using this cardboard one would be the cheapest way. I glued on a Lego peg to the trailer's "latch" so it would fit with all the trailer wheels on the ground. Otherwise it tipped forward a little.

I think it looks alright. The wheels are too big, but it has full range of motion...

Thanks! I was considering the Kre-O trailer at one point. (The Prime with that set is about the same size as leader Prime.) But I read that the trailer would have been too small. Then I remembered I had this stuck away...:thumbs2:

I got a request for the trailer's dimensions. The box alone is 13.5 in long, 4 in wide, and just about 4 in tall. When connected to RotF Prime, the trailer is almost 6.25 in from top to ground.
Let me know if there are any other questions!

This is a good idea for a custom trailer. I actually did this myself except I only gave my leader prime the trailer. I didn't do anything to it though. You made it look awesome.

Definitely, I looked around for them in stores now and then. I was hoping to find a trailer the same size so I could just flop the cardboard right on top of it. But the one I used was the closest I could find and was dirt cheap. I have a second one that I left untouched to also use, though I rarely ever do actually use it...

I might seen a bit dim asking this question, but Im really wondering exactly what you did. How did you make the sides out of card. Did you do the art work on a PC than print it or did you just draw it by hand yourself? If you did it on a pc, do you happen to have the design saved because i would be interested in them to do one myself...

Not at all, that's a good question. The cardboard trailer came with the Takara MP-01 toy, the original masterpiece Optimus Prime sold in Japan. I attached a pic I found online so you can see what it looked like. It came as an insert with the box and had to be punched out and assembled.
All I did was cut the bottom off of the cardboard trailer and put it over the modified plastic one. Now it has working wheels.
