Something I posted on cybertron.ca last year but that should be new here... You only need 2 clear rubber bands.

    Sideswipe!
    Bumblebee!
    Skids!
    Mudflap!
    Jetfire!
    Optimus Prime!
    COMBIIIIIIIIINE!

I must add: I want to find a way to integrate magnets to get rid of the leg rubber bands.

It took me a minute to realize that this could have actually happened in the film...

Very creative stuff, especially as it requires absolutely no modding (unless, as you say, you want to ditch the bands). As Jolt says, I love how you've made use of Skids' and Mudflap's oversized mitts to make more proportional ones for the combined mode (even if they still look really big :p ).
Personally, I'd recommend making a post/hole system to connect Prime with Sideswipe and Bumblebee, if you can, rather than using the magnets. Magnets are hardly ever used in real Transformers (Alternator steering mechanisms aside), and so the pegs would make them feel much more like they're still authentic figs as opposed to customs. If that makes sense. :p

Now all that's missing is a Legends Wheelie to transform into their head. :D

Maybe I could use some of the articulated Minicon pegs on some of the PCC drones...

Very nice! Have you considered using the same limbs on a Scout-sized body?

Not really, I want to make my combiner only with Legends figures AND movie characters. I'll see if there's something I can do with Ironhide, Ratchet, Jolt, Wheelie and Jazz...

Would anyone be able to design proper connectors with Shapeways to get rid of the rubber bands?

I'm so glad someone revived this thread because this is one of my favorite Legends "combiners" because it just works SO WELL.
