Yes, you must remove it to transform.

Very cool :thumb  I'm going to have to order a few of these.

Thanks for designing this for all of us :)

If that's the case, does it have a function in alt mode? If so, what? (my second question is to allow for creative thinking :D )

Add a magnet on the back, and then those slots he carved out for the missiles can be used for extra firepower. Actually, the shoulder rockets are detachable with enough force, so you could do that without any more alteration than simply adding a Neodymium magnet to both sides.

And yes, i need this. If only i had money (it's actually a reasonable price, too!).

I suppose I could try to do something with it. I would want it to be an additional piece or pieces, as I wouldn't want to increase the cost any more than it is. Damn your creative stimulation!

Shapways is located in the Netherlands. They offer free worldwide shipping, on the condition that you order at least $25 of product at a time. So you simply find items you like in their catalogue of user-uploaded designs, choose the material you'd like to have them printed in, and check out and pay using paypal. They have a very efficient system for both uploading designs and purchasing them.

MMmmmm....that's some good OCD. My first impression was why do a project like this, but after looking at my G1 Prowl, I can see why. That also would make the figure a bit more weighted for additional posing as well.

Is it safe to assume that this filler piece will be removable for transformation?

I like the idea, and I'm curious to see how it'll look after detailing as well as the eventual cost. The fact that you're looking to do LESS than the $18.00 it cost to get the prototype (if all goes well) is a pretty decent sign.

Only thing I'd have against it is I like the idea of the launchers "storing" in the toy's back in robot mode, and how this would take that away. And I rather assume it was going to be a piece you'd have to remove and have off to the side in alt-mode. But it certainly fills that gap quite nicely.

I'll have to keep up with this and see how you do.

Yeah, my "stimulation" :) D) was more like, "what can be done with this piece in alt mode as is, with no modifications?" I felt that it would be a pretty neat, creative problem to play around with/bad pun.

Well that's certainly less cost-consuming! I'll have to get back to you.

Alrighty, here's the idea -- I'm going to make three small modifications to the model.

    1. Carve intakes into the front.
    2. Increase the size of the missile slots, so that it can attach to the spoiler.
    3. Make the opening at the top slightly large to accommodate a 5mm weapon.

As you can see in the photos below, this will turn the back piece into a ridiculously oversized G2-inspired engine/weapon thingamajig. There's a pretty good chance this will net a reduction in the amount of material in the model, making it less expensive.

Here's a picture of the model. I'll update again when I get the prototype.

I think I am glad I held off a little on ordering. Now will this means that both styles will be available?

Very nice. You could probably do the same thing with the Titanium Rodimus mold too. It has the same issue.
