My first attempt at paintiing without using paint pens, based off of Shadow Striker - ROTF Legends - Transformers Resources
The colors are good, I like the black, red, & gold colorscheme. However, I concur with the "frosting" comment, it looks like you applied the paint far too thick! Can you give us any info on what paints you used to paint him?
This is a good first shoot at a custom, but those paints aren't exactly good to exclusively use on Transformer figures, especialy on the exposed parts or areas of high friction. It WILL scratch off over time unless sealed, and constantly having to repaint the same figure over and over again will make the custom more of a bothersome chore as opposed to a nice unique display piece. I'd recomend going for some paint along the lines of Floquil or other water-based acrylics that aren't super-cheap like Americana and Delta. The paints are more expensive, but they're stronger and more resistant to scratching, thus well worth the extra coin used to buy them. That's not to say cheapo Acrylics aren't good, I still use them myself, but mostly as external accent coats on top of my other, stronger paints.
I would suggest thinning them out significantly for your next project. That will help you get smoother (and less birthday cake-like) results. And go for the well-known Hobby brands like Testors or Tamiya.
I recommend the Tamiya personally, you'll have to thin that down too (consistency of milk the general rule) and brush it on in 2-3 thin layers for a good even coat. Aside from that, your color scheme is pretty cool, looks better than my first custom. Keep at it man, the more you practice the funner it gets.
wat kinda paint are u using? looks thick as everyone else has said... however those colors are bad ass! use the recommendations that everyone else as said.. tamiya.. thinning.. layering the paint on thinly will work best even tho it will take time
I think this thread has really done well (for the most part) to give some decent feedback for the artist. Nyarlahotep, I think you could have been quite a bit more constructive and helpful, though the consensus is agreeable (and I'd fall in line as well). These Walmart paints, as I think of 'em, aren't good for customs, unless you add some kind of sealant to them, as Autobot Burnout suggested. Pledge Future floor polish will work well, as will other clear coats (such as Testors). My recommendation would be to mix the clear coat in with the paint, though. I've use these paints plenty of times with my own blends, and they can work nearly as well as model paint, especially if you're looking for a particular color. Hopefully, you'll use this thread to improve upon your work. Radicons have seen other artists post the same types of work, give their feedback, and only have the artists respond with the same level of work. The best artists in Radicons here continually push their own envelope Keep up the good work
