Rippersnapper isn't bad at all. I've always liked your modding. One thing: try not to paint on moving parts or portions where parts will be rubbing against each other. If you have to, use a sharpie that's close to the colors you'll be using or sand down the area first.
Also on areas were the paint will have a chance to rub off,try painting a few thin coats of different metal colors,that way when the paint rubs it looks more like a natural weathering. Are you using those big containers of acrylic paints found in craft stores?
