I just got a new print out of the new Shapeways maker material (meaning not available to you yet) Black Hi-Def Acrylic. How good is it? Well, it is VERY GOOD.

Unlike FUD, the surface is high-gloss smooth, with virtually no layering artifacts:

From the side you can see some

This guy has more, but only because I used lighting to exaggerate the layering artifacts:

The material itself "looks" rubbery, but it is still brittle - no way as brittle as FUD. When cut, it does not just slice open with the blade like black acrylic, nor does it crack open unpredictably like FUD, it is somewhere in-between, feels a lot more controllable, close to some of the harder plastic (like the one used for construct-a-bot).

And the price is cheaper than FUD for a single-piece design. I am really looking forward to it become more available.

Holy crap, Shapeways doesn't suck anymore! That actually looks like it could be painted and put on a TF and not stick out horribly. The Computron head especially turned out perfect!

Wow, I actually thought that was some kind of custom ABS piece from the thumbnail, not something Shapeways. Extremely impress. Maybe I'll be using Shapeways more often. Can't wait to see your customs now with this kind of material. :D

I never bought from Shapeways because the material looks horrible. The best designs look like carved soap or sandstone, which kill any and all interest I have in dealing with that stuff.
If this is the direction they're going, I may completely change my mind. This material looks a thousand times better.

Is it sturdy? Does it work for ball joints and stuff or is it better in smaller quantities on certain items that need it?

IMO, quite sturdy. I made an Afterburner head and it can slide on and off a 6mm ball joint without issue - and I made it pretty tight. Time will tell.

Okay. Trying to start making my own Legends 3D printed figures. I'm starting out with an Omega Spreem, and then others down the line will include BM Blastcharge, Sixshot and possibly Energon Optimus Prime.

wow, really took their game up a notch with this material. My main question is: is it paintable?

I was curious about this too, so I went researching on Shapeways's own site. Seems like they think it is. I'm interested in trying this material out for myself. Looks promising.

It's really good because I wanted to make custom Lego Minifigure parts. Finally I can make Anime Minifigures! THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS! ENDLESS I TELL YOU!

Excellent. Better quality AND cheaper? I might actually buy some stuff from Shapeways if this works out!

I don wonder how these will be discussed in my 3D printing class. Looks like I jumped on the bandwagon at just the right time.

I've literally been waiting and waiting for this moment. I've only ever ordered ONE item from shapeways (TF wise) and now I am going to buy everything once this is available publicly. Especially your stuff Steamshield.

i havent tried this yet, but at $5 per part, it will be very expensive for a multi-part print, no? i guess spruces is the only solution, is it easy to cut?

With the right clippers anything can be easy.

There's a REALLY good pair at my local hobby store, but I've been way too strapped for cash to pick it up. With all this CW stuff going on I have to set my priorities. Deluxe Transformers are far less likely to stay on shelves.

This will be a game changer for sure. There are several parts and kits on Shapeways that I've wanted to order, but never pulled the trigger due to price and looks. If this becomes widely available, I just might start getting some of them!
