Hello all! I wanted to drop in and get some feedback on this mp-10 repaint I am working on.... My issue is that I put down some trans-blue over some alclad silver and it isn't blue at all. It's more of a teal color (to me anyways) so my plan is to hit it with some sand paper, mask it back up and spray with either tamiya ts-15 or ts-44. I feel like the ts-15 will push it towards looking more like xelteckon's mp-10, while the ts-44 will move it towards the hot toys optimus prime blue. Both I think are great and I can't really make up my mind. Just curious if I'm crazy to even consider the brighter blue color...
Lol, Thanks! I kinda like it too but it would just drive me nuts over time. Also, I think maybe it's too much metallic paint. I think having some regular blue next to the metal bits will help them pop a little more.
What sort of Prime are you going for? The brighter blue looks a bit too pale to me, but it depends on what other colours you plan to pair it up with. Pity, I am a sucker for metallics.... How many coats of transparent blue did you hit it with? Does it get significantly darker with each coat,or is that teal-ey blue as far as it gets?
Going for classic Prime. I ordered a can of each color and will do a little test before applying to see what they look like in real life, colors are all over the place viewing online. The upper legs turned out ok, a little darker than what I was going for but I like it. This is my first repaint so I'm learning as I go. I laid down several coats of the transparent blue and it may have eventually turned blue but I started to freak out a little lol. I think for future metallic I'll avoid alclad's transparent colors. Haven't decided yet on the red but I think I'm gonna go for Model Masters flame red lacquer.
The upper legs are badddd! Lovin em. One thing i'll toss out there since ya said its your 1st repaint. On rub spots like the joint ratchet etc. lay a light gold or copper base befor the steele/silver, as it rubs which it will no matter how well prepped, it will reveal it gently. Your eyes are already trained to see it and accept it as "normal wear". Think cheap jewelry or gumball machine prizes from chilhood. Ive found it a great way to avoid the urge to go fix every little thing a hundred times over.
Your first? I hate you. If the teal (which looks the bomb) isn't what you want - go bright - I reckon you'll pull it off fine!
I actually like the way it looks right now, and I think the metallic 'teal' will also have nice consistency with the upper legs. Though I do see the concern that it will visually 'pop out' more if you use a normal blue (and on that note, I like the darker blue).
You could probably keep that teal metallic, and use it to go for a Marvel Comics Prime colour scheme? Maybe pair it with a nice gloss yellow-based red or something, it would technically still be a G1 Prime, just more obscure and geeky!
Yes, this is my first TF custom! I'm kinda learning as I go, I have learned a lot from the scale model forums and videos, especially the aircraft military guys. I have also had to strip the paint and completely start over more than once. So, it's a learning process and I think I'm getting to a point where I'm finding out what works and what doesn't. That's awesome everyone digs the teal, lol, maybe I should have left it. Anyways, I'm still not 100% sure which way I'm gonna go but I'm leaning towards the darker blue. I almost have everything masked back up and new paints should be here tomorrow. Also, here is a pic of my first attempt of the lower legs, I think it turned out OK but the paint was super soft and I think I went overboard with the weathering/distressing.
The dark blue paint came in. Here is a little test spray. I tried to take it in the right light that best showed its true color. I'm using the tire covers as a test piece since I'm not using them on this MP-10. I like this blue a lot! You can kinda see the difference between the two colors on this piece. Top is the new blue and the teal color is at the bottom.
Perfect! Your caution and tweaking and tests are going to yield an absolutely glorious Prime in the end, I can't wait.
Thanks! It is indeed a labor of love. This thread is defiantly going to help the process along. Might as well just shift it into a worklog now. Maybe others can benefit from my trials and errors Anyways, I sprayed the new blue and it laid down really nice. I'm going to give it 24 hours and gloss clear coat it. I think having a deep gloss paint job (with a bit of weathering) next to the duller metal bits will look super sharp. Below is a pic of an original YOTH OP head next to the new one with the new blue, also added a pic of my finished smoke stacks, I may add some blue or yellow heat stains to them though.
I thought I read that you were sanding the parts down where you weren't happy with the paint. Have you considered using 91% isopropyl alcohol instead?
Sorry for the confusion, I was just doing a little wet sanding to smooth out any orange peel on the existing paint. Then I just painted right over it. I figured since all the paint is lacquer based so far, I should be fine painting over it.
Gotcha. I just wanted to make sure you weren't making the process harder than it needed to be. Count me in as another one who thought the "tealish" color looked great.
