At long last, this project is finally complete! I was beginning to think this would never end..... Starting back in June, I began with the trailer this time, as the level of detail in this mold is a bit intimidating. I was determined to do what I had wanted to do the first time, but lacked the skill at the time, and that was to bring the trailer to life. I had an idea to have the trailer glowing with energon, inspired by a picture I had seen at the time of Cybertron in grays and blues. I didn't want to get too busy with color, so I tried not to stray from those but instead used various hues of the 2. All colors as usual are custom mixed Kustom Kolor paints, pre-shaded and sealed with Alclad Klear Kote. I also used various metallic tones from Alclad, and then panel lined everything with CreateFX black acrylic wash, followed by some light edge wear. Various parts were also micro polished and buffed for a glassy finish. Big thanks also to my friend Z, for Prime's killer new set of hands and input along the way, thanks brother. This marks the first custom created in my new shop, after nearly a year since my last. I also went out and got a new 35mm Sony Cybershot and a new photo tent. Enjoy!
Mmmmm crispy paint, looks AWESOME!!! Based on that trailer I'd love to see what you could do with a cybertron/galaxy force figure, given the ludicrous amounts of molded detail on some of them. That pec window is driving me nuts though, its so slightly out of alignment Whatever Its great anyway!!!
Thanks! Thanks man, which figure though? Not familiar with that line, got a picture to refresh my memory? And yes, the window on this mold was quite irritating, I forgot to mention in the description about how many of those hours were spent fixing and adjusting the QC issues with this version (YOTH) vs. the Takara and Hasbro ones I've painted before. This is my 4th time painting this mold, and this recent batch is not even close to the original anymore.
Really top-grade work, Jbarb78! I really like how the paint job brought out the details on this mold. Your work really inspired me on my MP-01Plus conversion project.
Well my vote would go to vector prime, all the cogs and gears make him so delightfully steampunk in asthetic, which would work great with just about any kind of metalic finish you could give him. There are a few repaints of him, but none of them highlight the clockwork detail as much as I'd like, another upside to him is that he is extremely simple to dismantle and transform, about the only detraction I can think of is that his wings and sword are plasticized PVC (rubbery plastic), which doesn't really like paint, though I've had luck in the past with latex based paint owing to its relative flexibility, but I'm sure others on the boards have solutions for those kinds of things. Another excellent choice would be Primus, or maybe soundwave. I love sort of living vicariously through others on these sorts of things in the customizing community, especially the painting because it never ceases to amaze me how a paint job can make such a radical difference to literally ANY figure. I myself have much more experience on the sculpting/3D side of things, and I've tried to get into painting as well, but that fell through when my airbrush and compressor (along with a great deal of other things) were stolen a few years back, souring me on the thought of continuing, and resigning myself to panel lining and minor touch ups. But I've rambled long enough, and I'm looking forward to whatever you decide to do next!!
That is amazing work! Optimus looks incredible and his trailer is the best trailer custom I have ever seen!
I am speechless... nearly I caught glimpses of some of the wip pics of this over the past few months and knew it was going to turn out great but this is absolutely fantastic!! I actually can't get nit-picky enough to find something wrong with this (which is saying something) your paintwork is exquisite. I am especially impressed with the light edge wear and how it brings out the details and increases the realism without making Prime look battered or broken. I'm also impressed with the magnitude of the detail put into the trailer! so much to paint! your hard work really paid off, this is truly a masterpiece.
