DMK 01 Optimus Prime 'realistic' repaint/custom

Hey guys I've just finished my DMK01 Dual Model Kit Optimus and thought I'd post it here for some valuable feedback from you all. I was trying to stay as close to the ILM CGI model look whilst taking a few liberties with wear effects and such.

[IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

    What do you guys think?

There are more photos here including all WIP shots: Dual Model Kit Optimus Prime WIP assembly shots on Pinterest | 75 Pins

As I work in 3D printing I am planning to 3D model and print some of Optimus' main movie weapons such as his Triple barrel rifle, Dual Blaster pistols, Axe of Doom etc. I will be uploading those onto my Shapeways account too if anyone is interested in printing one for themselves!:)

Thanks a lot man! I don't know if I went a bit too far with wear and grime? I wanted to make him look something between his normal and damaged look at the end of DOTM. Don't know, I just love 'messing up' models and rusting stuff haha:D

I've seen some pretty good DMK OP builds before, but this one truly takes the cake!

The only other times I've felt confused at whether I was looking a figure or the real thing (CGI in this case) was when browsing pics of Hot Toys figs. If you put a pic of this next to a pic of a movie OP CGI model, I doubt many can tell the difference.

The rust effects are ultra realistic! How did you do that?

thanks a lot guys! Truly I really appreciate all the comments! This was my only second Transformers custom project so I was afraid I really bodged it up lol

HasTak, to answer your question I used Citadel corrosion paint to paint on the rust wet first. That paint has grains of sand in it so it gives the finish an ultra realistic look. I then used Citadel bright orange rust dry paint (sorry all the Citadel's fancy paint names elude me atm) to dry brush brighter rust on top of the first coat. To finish the overall look I then used whatever metal paint I used for the undercoat of the part the rust sits on to dry brush on top of the rust just to even it out so it is not so in your face, if you know what I mean. This way it blends onto a part better and looks more natural imo

This looks amazing. Really beautiful work. And thanks for the explanation on doing the rust! Did you use brushes on all of this?! Wow.

thank you very much!! Yeah I tend to use brushes for all of my model kits. I should 'really' get a spray gun and use spray paint more often though. It saves time and gives you a better uniform finish but hey it can't beat getting close and personal with brushes lol

Here are some Metal Gear kits I've done in the past:

Haha you are too kind! I was thinking that after I've 3D modeled some weapons for him and a custom led-eliminated stand I would buy this kit again and do another one in the same style to put up on sale together with all the accessories.

Really wanna get DMK03 Knight Prime. He looks like ass in those default plastics Takara is shipping him in but he could look good with proper metal colors and some weathering...

    Breathtaking!!!

A lot of his weapons are already available on Shapeways or as 3rd party accessories, if you want to save yourself some time...:thumb

Just echoing everyone else, these are amazing! And I really did have to to do a double take to see if the OP ones were 3D renders. Great work! Completely blown away.

    Thanks man!
Hehe true but if I print them through my workplace I won't have to pay to Shapeways and machines we got are vastly superior to theirs in build quality and details. We are making parts for Formula One cars after all:)  but the downside is that I have to 3D model the weapons myself. Would be fun tbh.

Are Optimus' blaster pistols from ROTF available on Shapeways too? These are the ones I really want to do for him lol

Thanks so much man! It's crazy how sound ILM's statement was that the bots looked fake when being presteen and shiny and only after they 'dirtied' them up with grime and wear did they became realistic! I use the same thinking in all of my kits haha:)  they just tend to look more real when scratched and dirtied in oppose to clear spray paint finish and such.

Many thanks for the in-depth explanation!

I've got to get my hands on some of that Citadel paint! Not that I'd be able to use them to such great effect like you did here, but one has to start somewhere, no? :)

I'm still trying ot figure out if you painted the blue and red parts, as the flame effects don't look like decals. Did you mask them off and paint them, or simply applied weathering over the bare plastic?

No worries! Yeah I just use the default red and blue plastic parts it came with. Should have really painted them all but I hate applying decals so it was a trade-off.

What I did with them was to use a sand paper to scratch the plastic parts a bit here and there to give them a bit of texture. I then used Citadel black in wash to go over the parts so the ink would fill in the scratches and details like panel lines etc. I then used Citadel gloss clear varnish to coat the car panel pieces and make them glossy and reflective. Last step was to use Citadel fun metal paint to weather the pieces with dry brushing to add those wear and scratch effects on the edges and such. You can also add a bit of rust here and there for an extra realistic look;)

You, sir, are an absolute genius! The effects you got from this technique made it near impossible to tell if the model was painted or not. If it wasn't for the flame patterns, I would have never suspected that was bare plastic.

Looking forward to see your future builds!
