So here's another chrome removal and minor paint custom to leader Jetfire.
It's not just that the hidden shinny red plastic looks leaps and bounds better than the nasty cheap chrome, of course it does, but I forgot how much hidden molded details are completely and utterly lost when you add a thick layer of vac metal chrome plus paint.
This fast pack was just layered with fantastic detailing that you cant apreachiate when its lost under all that plating.

The original red plastic blends and matches the toy and its red paint on a completely different level and looks killer.
I painted the tips and gun black and finally the autobot badge on his chest.
This is one of my most loved figures now. Couldn't be happier.

I may end up doing that to the Hasbro one I'm getting. What did you use to remove the chrome?

Denatured alcohol first to remove the paint then super clean for the chrome.

So that's the natural red plastic untouched other than the black paint?

    Yup.. Its shinny too.
You have to use glossy plastic with vac metals... Like this..

The grey factory plastic that was under the chrome is clean and very glossy.

    Used to look like this.

How did you get the canopy off without breaking it to paint the badge?

The top has a small indent tab.
I carefully inserted a small flat head and poped it out.
2 tabs secure it at the bottom.
So just prying it at the top and it pops off.
This clear plastic is somewhat plyable so it does bend a bit without cracking.

Did you have to take the figure apart to do this?

Nice work! Painting the details between the "ribs" on his boosters brings out a lot of hidden detail, too.

Nope... But you can and should unscrew the fast packs from the center part that clips to the back.
    2 screws.

I'm currently soaking the vac parts in alcohol, and i have a bath of purple power ready to go. i see a little bit of progress in the alcohol. do i need to do more than soak the parts? brisk cottonball rubbing maybe?

    Just soaking and patience...
Depending on how thick the plating was layed on, ive had parts completely dissolve of all chrome in minutes and sometimes, like my recent classic prime it took 8 hours.
    Go figure

Just saw him at TRU today.
First time out in stores anywhere.
Totally didnt recognized him, I forgot how he used to look with all that chrome and no black paint apps.
I cant believe how much better he looks now.
After I got used to seeing him this way it was even more jarring to see him in his original colors.

    Awesome job!

Just a few questions about your process?

So you submerged the parts in denatured alcohol (I think its methylated spirits here in Aus?). How long did it take before the paint stripped off?

And you said you used super clean after. Was that the super clean degreaser? We don't have that here but have something called simple green degreaser so I assume its similar. Did you submerge the parts in super clean too? And how long did it take to strip the chrome?

Thanks heaps for sharing this. I can't wait to do mine.
