    Hello All,

Got Grimlock today. I'm been looking forward to this figure for quite some time.

Before I begin some crude recreations of FOC game scenes.

The final confrontation between Shockwave and Grimlock from the game is an epic scene.

So first of all it is worth saying that this guy is HUGE in Robot mode. You may have already seen pics of him next to FOC deluxe Prime but even that doesn't quite do it justice.

Given the hype around this figure I should get it out of the way - he is initially a disappointment. This is mainly due to a very simple transformation and that he is very hollow or lacking in substance in places - think FOC Swindle. However once my initial euphoria turned to pessimism, it equalized with satisfaction.

Despite the shortcomings of the figure, there are a lot of plus points. His arms and legs are rock solid with some very tight joints. His paint scheme whilst not intricately detailed is still decent.

His transformation - as detailed with the pics below - is comprised of five key steps.

Step 1 fold the hands in and adjust the claws

Step 2 Flip the backpack over his head and straighten the dino head out

Step 3 Fold the arms in under the robot chest and lock them in place to narrow his dino width

Step 4 Bend the now dino legs so they can support his weight

Step 5 Fold the robot legs up onto the now dino back and clip the tail ends together

So the transformation is simple and, although, the T-Rex mode looks good it does end up having a overly large tail

Also worth noting is that although he is best posed in a traditional T-Rex position - head and tail at similar levels - you can still arrange him into a G1-esque pose.

His dino face also looks excellent

Before I go onto general pluses and minuses of the figure I have a crude photo set showing both Dino and Robot from front, side back and underneath.

    Plus Points

    Huge in size
    solid figure
    decent paint job
    good head sculpt
    good dino head
    a reasonably understandable gimmick
    decent articulation in robot mode

    Negatives

    Very hollow in parts
Dino mode tail is much larger than rest of body
Dino legs look a bit stumpy
Dino mouth, head and neck have no or limited articulation
Dino arms fall off on mine (might be a limited QC issue)

As a final size comparison here he is in robot mode next to TFP FE Prime (one of the larger original voyager of recent times) who Grimlock towers over.

Thanks for reading and if you have any questions or picture requests, I'll do my best to answer them.

Meh. I must be the only one really unimpressed with this. He's beig hyped up so much I can see a lot of people being disappointed when they finally get him.

Dino mode looks a bit dodgy but the robot mode is spot on to the game, especially with the v. Cool sword and shield.

The whole FOC line has been only average so he fits in.

Overall I reckon the sum of the line is greater than each individual toy. The FOC universe is brilliant. I'll get Grimlock just to keep Shockwave company :)

Loving this guy, transformation seems similar to the G1 figure.

Can you take a photo from the front in dino mode to show how hollow the chest / stomach is?

its a pity the dino mode is so compromised, the G1 toy formed a solid little dino then compromised the robot as was typical for the first ex diaclone stuff, the simple transformetion is a turn off but in hand it might prove to be fun, i still like the way the animated toy mirrors the g1 sequence, this one omits the cool chest move, oh well. He is better than the classics toy, which was nice and well made but i grew to despise!

A big badass looking grimlock for todays kids anyhow!

I honestly wish the end of the tail folded to the outside of the legs instead of inside, but I can see it as necessary in filling the huge gap there.
I'm far from a stickler to G1 designs, but I really liked how the tail on the outside of the legs made the original Grimlock look bulkier. The MP changed that, and it's the only point of that figure I'm not fond of. With this figure, the legs seem skinny, and it's due to there being no extraneous parts to bulk them up.
Oh well, it won't keep me from buying one. After all, 'yesterday's kids' want a badass Grimlock, too.

I have to agree. I really was never too impressed with him, as his proportions seems a slightly bit off to me. And also that his weapons seem meager compared to his on screen counterpart's.

At the same time, I really don't think it's all that bad. Perhaps he'll have that "once in-hand" type of turnabout some figures give. So I would the very least give the figure a chance.

I do like the fact that he is a Voyager that towers. And not that it needed to be an ultra figure to do so. That too me is a plus.

    Thanks for the review

Could help in the future not to take pics with the camera pointing towards sunny Windows.

I think this is a clearance buy for me. Something about the legs just REALLY looks like crapload to me. Mabye the gigantic knee cap, or the curvy toe...just looks horrible. Dino mode is so compromised it looks bad. Any way you slice it, that tail looks horrible.

I'm not remotely interested in this one, but my son prolly would be. I think I'd rather have an animated grimlock.

If they repaint him in G2 blue I'll get him since that was my first TF, but otherwise this figure looks just meh. Not horribly bad, just not "go get it NOW" exciting.
Doesn't help he's not that different from other Grimlocks other than aesthetics and a light gimmick.

I'll get it if I see it, but if this becomes one of those hard to get scalper-bait toys, then I'll pass.
