I remember showing someone that's into modern comics Target:2006, which I thought was a pretty cool bit or art what with the painterly colour job on it, and they laughed in my face about how crap it looked.
Many just don't seem to understand what this title is trying to do. They just look at it and go 'WTF? Crap artwork! OMG!'.

I think possibly that attitude might hurt sales of this title. Which will be a pity. How often do we get this kind of cool concept comic?

So many now never grew up on anything other than the more modern style and computer coloured artwork. And even though that may have technical skill over the old stuff I often feel it's lacking soul. Makes me feel kinda old and kinda glum.
It's the old style of artwork like featured in this thread that I used to learn to ink comics myself. There's just something more organic and satisfying about it.

Maybe IDW can cater to both sides and replicate this story in the modern style too. Although part of me also thinks it shouldn't have to bend to cater for those that just don't 'get it'. If modern comic buyers can eat up the shit-awful artwork of Heart of Darkness then this Regeneration title shouldn't faze them at all.

Imo, modern colouring is like autotune. It has it's place, and works well when used sparingly, but when it's all there is, it's soulless and dull.
I find myself looking at painted or otherwise stylized comics a lot more these days as a result.

As for this, I love it, and I think a lot more of IDW because they have allowed their creative to pay tribute to the original style, putting artistic merit before mainstream conformity.
They certainly got my money, which is a first.

I'm ridiculously excited for this - I followed the comics from 1986 to #332 (Marvel UK numbering) in 1992. Given that we only had Series 1 of the cartoon on ITV in the 80s, for me the comic was the definitive story, an epic that I followed through my childhood.

Between this, RID and MTMTE, this is the year of TF comics.  

 

So are they redrawing old comics? I don't understand the hype behind this. Could someone explain this to me?

 

It's brand new comics stories directly continuing the original Transformers comic series from the 80s by the original creators who made the 80s book. It's continuing that series with new stories, done in the style of the original (or as close as it can be replicated by the same creators) 20 years later.

Why is it a big deal?

Well it was the ORIGINAL Transformers continuity. It started before the G1 Cartoon and continued LONG after the G1 Toon ended. For many fans the Marvel Comic was Generation 1. It's hugely popular among fans who grew up on G1, the final run by Furman and Wildman especially.

Imagine the G1 Cartoon continued by the same writers and still living voice actors. This is just as big a deal.


-ZacWilliam, has every issue of the original run, most acquired as a kid during the 80s and read countless times over. Can not wait for this.  

 

Marvel's G1 run was my G1, for the most part -- Grimlock as leader of the Autobots, the adventures of Blaster and Goldbug, that really wacky Skids story where he thinks he's a cowboy or some nonsense, the Throttlebots being placed into tiny cars, the Decepticon civil war, Ratchet being awesome all around (and then merging with Megatron)... all of it was great stuff.

So stoked this is coming back. The cartoon was great and all, but Marvel G1 really eclipsed it imo and gave a lot of these characters personalities that far eclipse what you saw on the show.

Its a shame that Budiansky has kind of distanced himself from the franchise (from what I gather in interviews, to him it was just another job and he doesn't remember a lot) but I'm glad that Furman is still a big part of it.

I'm also hoping we'll see a continuation of Ratchet and Megatron's rivalry somehow.

I think they battled more in Marvel G1 than Optimus and Megatron did! For some reason I always felt the Ratchet / Megatron stories were some of the best. Those comics really elevated Ratchet into a league of his own, I remember him single-handedly rebuilding a ton of Autobots along with Starscream.

I'm stoked! it's a nice evolution of the old 80s style. Kinda retro, but stepped up to date a bit. Coloring helps with that.

 

I'm so fired up for this thing to start back up! Like a dream come true. Furman & Wildman will shine bright on this run. Should cement their place in Transformers comics history as the best writer/artist duo to ever work on the property. God bless IDW for making this happen for us.

 

That's a great way to think of it. Same writers, voice actors and artists and animators. It's something that often gets brought up here as a subject in regards to the cartoon. But for the comics it's actually happening.

Although sadly these days any mention of reviving the old cartoon in the same style gets quickly shat upon. I suppose it was inevitable that something similar with the old comics series would garner the same kind of detractors.

 

I was cool with almost all of the art on the original Marvel series except for the insipid 50s/way late 40s. 51 forward until Andrew got on the book was this close to Disney Adventures/Archie style.

I forget who was on art duties for #16 but really liked that issue. Nice blend of movement, action, chromework, robotics and expressions. That was when Bumblebee thought he wasn't needed anymore.

The thing I liked overall about the Marvel run is that they weren't quite as posey as the Dreamwave stuff (don't get me wrong, I loved how the Dreamwave emulated the cartoons) was. That's partly why I like Milne so much (least I think it's Milne... I mix up a lot of the newer IDW artists) because he can draw the Transformers past the typical heroic pose, standard shooting shot, etc. They actually sit and talk, walk hand gestures etc to help sell the story.

Ok, you don't have to witness that but I can't wait! I usually wait for trades but am getting these single issues (and then TPBs) to relive the glory days of when I bought Marvels Transformers comics single issues at the grocery store in the late eighties and early ninthies.
The only thing better (for me) would have been Geoff Senior as the artist but Wildman would be my second choice.

 

This. Maybe we can at least get GS on covers or whaddayacallit, special covers...variant. Or maybe a sequence or two depending on the scene.
