I draw a distinction between detail, and realism.

Detailed does not necessarily equal realistic. Here's an example:

One of these is more detailed and complex looking, and the other is an actual functioning robot.

So? I have RotF Mindwipe in my Classics display and he looks nothing like G1 Mindwipe. It's all up to personal preference.

yeah, but overall, Mindwipe is one of those "on the border" figs ~ his body layout is much "blockier" (i.e. various body parts made up of significant vehicle chunks that are still recognizable as such) in bot mode then most of the movie style figs... I wouldn't probably mix him in because of his head design and hands, but i can see how some people would (which i just can't with Brawn, he's just too movie-centric)

So, anyone who can remember, being that the upcoming Lugnut figure is a Voyager will he be truncated like the Animated version or will he actually be about the size of a normal Voyager figure?

Most of these did not have pictures of toys(let alone comparison with other toys), they just had colored design sketches. So that'd be hard to say.

Ah, I see. Thought they were at least showing early design pics so that someone might have an idea, but I can see where it'd be a difficult call if all of these were just design sketches. Thanks anyways.

Do you remember which ones had actual photos of prototypes, and which ones had only got as far as design sketches?

I presume it would give us an idea of how close they are to becoming a reality.

Also, and I've asked it a few times, but no one seems to know, but did Jazz have the big spoiler at the rear of the car, G1 style?

Has it occurred to you that your first picture would look a lot more "complex and detailed" were it not for the blocky plastic covering? I'd like to see that turn into a vehicle. :p

Also, the Stan Winston Studios has certainly created surprisingly mobile Terminator animatronics.

I don't remember any of them having actual toy photos, aside from the ones that have toy photos available online right now. I could easily be mistaken though. The spoiler... I didn't make a point of noticing/remembering.

Of course. But so...? At the end of the day, what is produced and made and used in the real world has coverings hiding detail: Asimo, Computers, Toasters, Cars, Clock-radios, on and on...

One quick point I would like to make is. Do you know why they cover all that detail? I am guess to protect the vital insides, but why would a robot want to protect it's vitals. Crazy talk!

Well, that's the thing. We cover computers and electronic devices so that things that could damage all those detailed internals can't get in there easily. So, yeah, the blocky design and coverings make sense. Having exposed gears for anything to just get stuck in does not... nor does it make sense to have exposed wiring to easily get tangled on anything. Of course, now we're talking practical versus visually appealing... and, I'll add to that, that many a tech geek friend of mine has clear coverings on their computers so that they can view all those visually appealing gadgets on their computers insides...

So I know I'm a few weeks late to the party, and it most likely has been answered already, but after quickly scanning the past few pages, I didn't see it mentioned...but I'm just dying to know...

What the heck was she wearing?

Good point that is why some sports cars have openings or see through paneling on their hood. Now if we are talking a visual appealing that differs depending on who is looking at it. My point is just like the movie where the bots protect their face with their masks. Why not the rest of the body?

None of the electronics mentioned in this thread have two completely distinct modes, one of which walks and talks.

The robot is completely concealed in car or jet or toaster mode. It's understandable that it looks a little rough when they break the outer covering into tons of little panels and move it away from their joints.

Thanks just the same. To be honest I care more about Jazz having the spoiler than about stuff like pop-out speakers.

I'm really surprised that they were all drawings. Even the Legends class, scout class, Power Core and retools(Grapple, Skullgrin, Cliffjumper)?

I can somewhat understand the Generations stuff... I think that stuff is often put on the backburner. We saw drawings of Sunstreaker/Sideswipe long before that actually became a reality.

Yeah, that's a very good point.

Personally I'm more concerned about visual appeal, than arguing over the realism of it. If a faceplate looks cool, that's good enough for me.

I'd like to see them go for a sort of concealed detail look if they ever reboot the movies. It should feel very heavy and like there's a lot of sophistication underneath, but the detail shouldn't intrude and clutter the bot mode any more than necessary.

You will have to wait another week, no one was allowed to take photo's of what the panel was showing on screen. SDCC is a different story you will see all the new stuff by the end of next week.

It all comes down to visual interest. The real robot is visually boring. The Terminator is visually interesting. No one would want to see a movie about a bunch of Asimos (or whatever its called) over throwing humanity and film is, above all else, a visual storytelling medium.
