I can't afford (and really don't want to buy) another new MP Optimus right now, so all I could think to do is upgrade MP-10 a bit to freshen up his aging appearance. Drafted and test printed a set of G1 cartoony legs to streamline his look. NO, THEY DON'T TRANSFORM (yet) =). I rarely ever take my MP's out and transform them (although I do "play" with them in bot mode a lot), so my main objective was just to clean up his bot mode for my personal display. I plan to slowly test the possibility of making fully transformable G1 cartoon legs out of these, but for now it's not really a priority for me. I botched this particular test print by placing the ankle pivot joint in the wrong location, but I should be able to revise the ankle design tonight to be a fully functional rocker ankle. I do like the overall proportions of this set, and although I also drafted up a slimmer version to look more like the TE-01 legs, I feel like the size of these fit MP-10's overall beefiness just fine. I didn't have time last night to print out the fuel canisters for the legs, but they are designed and ready to go (they will plug into the 5mm port at the top of the legs at the knee). These legs are pretty huge and take almost 6-8 hours to print out depending on my settings, so I don't envision putting them up in my Shapeways shop for sale unfortunately, as they'd likely cost as much as a used MP-10 would nowadays with SW's new pricing model. **Oh, and for anyone that "hates" this look or thinks this is a lame project, feel free to NOT comment and keep doing your own thing, because that's all I'm doing myself. =) Original reference: Update 1.26.19 Created a new version of the G1 Leg set to give MP-10 taller, more proportional lower legs (shot out to Crim =). Update 1.25.19 Still tweaking the G1 Leg & Foot cover design for fun, significantly slimmed down the set to be less bulky overall, and also picked up some blue filament to require less painting. Still looking for a perfectly matched blue filament though... Update 1.22.19: Reworked my Heavy/Scratch: - MP-10 G1 Leg Set WIP and came up with a new item for sale. This G1 leg upgrade kit snaps directly onto the stock MP-10 Optimus legs and feet to give good ol' MP-10 a clean cartoon look for folks like me who dig the clean look of all the new Masterpiece Optimus options on the market, but are not able (or simply don't want) to replace the MP-10 that most of us already have. The leg panels CAN STAY ON DURING TRANSFORMATION; however the feet covers must come off (they are a simple clip on piece that are easy to install and remove) for truck mode. The leg panels are not trailer compatible though. Anyone interested in this kit can visit my Shapeways store Ultraman Zoffy's R&D Lab by ultramanzoffy - Shapeways Shops (note: their costs are VERY high for this kit, sadly). I might also be able to do a very, very limited direct sale run of these, but only for folks familiar with 3D print qualities that are willing to do all of the sanding/painting themselves. Update: Finally have a painted sample. Blue I bought isn't quite perfect, but close enough to get the idea. Running a higher resolution print next which should hopefully require a little less post-processing.
I think this is a lame project. Just kidding...I think it looks fantastic/amazing/incredible/etc. The leg proportions and overall aesthetic match the rest of the figure incredibly well. My MP-10V looks at yours with envy.
Yeah, even if I had the money for MP-44, I'm in the group that just can't justify that price for that particular item, especially when I have MP-10 and he likely won't sell for anything right now. Best just to try and do what I can with what I have.
Updated the foot/ankle design with a functional ankle rocker. Hoping to have time to run a high resolution print of the set this weekend and find the right paint to match the MP-10 blue. Any paint brand/color recommendations from MP-10 customizers is welcome!
These look amazing! I love MP-10 and am not looking forward to buying another MP Prime (especially for $450+). Would you be willing to share the STL files for those of us who feel adventurous with our 3D printers? Thanks!
I'm still working on tweaking the design pretty heavily right now, but I'm planning to eventually put the file up on Thingiverse for other 3D printing folks to try out. I'd like to be able to see if I can figure out how to make them transformable first though, and that'll probably take a while.
Looking great , the rocker for the ankle seems to be working great. Good to see you got that straightened out. IMO you should make the gas tanks slimmer. But of course it’s up to you and your taste.
Thanks for checking this thread out! Man, the gas tanks... so, I looked at a ton of G1 Prime images to try and figure out what the "standard" look for the tanks should be, and everything I saw was terribly inconsistent. I eventually just threw these tanks on just to represent them on the legs, but made it a 5mm port piece to make it easy to swap different tank designs in and out. I'd be happy to go smaller with them just to save on filament tbh. Lol
I was just hoping to come up with something that would keep MP-10 in the mix as a still viable alternative to the new V3 OPs on the market (for the financially strapped collectors like myself =) , so I'm really thankful to hear this design is working for some folks. Thanks for checking out the thread!
Not my cup of tea (the toon style) but those look FANTASTIC! Nice job! I'm a strong MP10 supporter, I just like the design a lot more then the upcoming MP, but he really does need new arms and legs. I really need to pick up that Shadow Fisher arm kit, just wish WJ would port their longer leg design to the figure. Gad that others will have an alternative with this!
Good reminder about that SF arm kit, I totally forgot about it! Hopefully it's not going for excessive prices at this point, I'd like to look one up.
$50/55 I think, so it hasn't gone too far over it's retail price yet. I can't wait to see your legs finished and painted up!
I might be one of the few but I'd like to see you take a crack at a more toy based replacement lower legs. What I would think would look great would be round gas tanks , fatter, more blocky feet. The front upper recessed rectangle would be more like a T to fit and original style sticker. I mention this because I'm in the middle of a custom toy based MP10,so I have been think about this very thing lately.
The idea for the gas tank is a good one,you can check out different gas tank shapes without doing a new big printing.....that is if you wanted too.
