Does Target have some new return policy on action figures? They initially refused to do a return on some Siege deluxes because they're "collectibles." A manager okayed it but only because they were unopened. I've never run into that before.

Target is a big leader in analytics in the retail space. I'm wondering if they've gotten some awareness of how big the adult collector market it is for the line compared to children and are changing return policy based on that.

They haven't accepted returns on opened "Collectibles" for a while now, but they've never considered Transformers as such before, to my knowledge. Maybe that's changed. I was able to easily return some Siege stuff to Target recently, but it was all unopened, so I don't know if I would've run into an issue if they were open.

Huh. I was able to return an opened defective SS Dropkick to the same store last week without issue, too, so I don't know what to make of it.

What sorts of things do they normally consider to be collecibles?

I'm not sure. Their website is vague:

Clearly, not everything in those categories is considered a collectible, and I'm not sure how to tell which specific items are.

"Action figures" certainly seems broad enough to cover Transformers. I gotta say, this gives me pause over continuing to use Target for Transformers purchases if you can't even return a defective item.

Defective items can't be returned? Now that's bullshit.

One incident at one store does not necessarily reflect a change in company policy. There is plenty of variation in how individual managers and even employees handle these things.

With all the people on here boasting about buying a bad one on the internet and then buying a good one from Target and returning the bad one to Target along with all the other BS people have been pulling on returns I cannot say I am surprised in the slightest.

More than likely this one employee was misinformed. I wouldn't worry about it unless we see more Targets doing this.

We’ve seen policies come and go over the years regarding “collectibles,” like getting stuff from the back, etc. And yes, each store and each manager has had leeway to handle it differently. But as of right now, the policy is posted on the official website. It’s not just a sign in the aisle in a store that got sick of the scalpers, repackers, and obnoxious entitled 8am rush regulars:

Enforcement will vary because that’s what happens when a company has thousands of employees. And I expect there to be plenty of blowback as the real world collides with boneheaded policy on 12/26. But in the meantime, it’s not misinformed employees, it’s employees following the rules.

I had a girl at Target think that I was returning a figure that had been opened because the tape Hasbro uses on the deluxe figures looks like I taped it back up.

I think it has a lot more to do with people throwing garbage they bought at a yard sale in new packaging and returning it to the store. I see it more at Walmart, but it occasionally happens at Target. When Walmart started clearancing Titans Return figures for $7, I saw a lot of Wave1 figures showing up in Power of the Primes boxes.

Yesterday I saw a Black Series Stormtrooper Package with a crappy big lots $5 Stormtrooper in it.

One time I returned some brand new, still-sealed POTP Prime Masters at Walmart. The employee was 100% convinced I had simply taped them back myself. He wasn't refusing to accept the return, just really felt like I had just taped them back up. He decided to mark them for return to the distributor, rather than put them back on the shelf. I told him that they came that way, and he was like "Ok fine, but I'm still going to return them to the distributor because this is just horrible!" Honestly they weren't even badly taped either, I've seen some bad ones before but these were as good as new.

I finished with him and when I was browsing the toy aisle later, I grabbed one off the shelf and brought it to him to show that was exactly how they came. He just shrugged and said "That's fine, I believe you" but he didn't go back on his plan. I was just baffled.
