And... this is why I skipped this guy- they probably let the same intern who designed MP Hot Rod design this guy. Absolutely no reason and TFs with a car alt mode should NOT easily roll. Inexcusable

Agreed. I did the modification while it was in alt mode, so it remained very much the same as far as looks go.
I probably made it far more complicated than necessary, and still have some work to do to make it sure.
I did all of it while he was in vehicle mode so that I could be sure the hinges would look good and the bumper would all line up.
But I basically cut where the pin was and removed the sides from the middle section. (Middle section remains uncut or changed aside from the removal of side parts and pins)
    20181029_194027.jpg
Then I cut the faux bumper parts off of their hinge and shaped them appropriately to attach to the real bumper parts. (The original hinge that the faux bumper was on should still be able to move when I'm all finished. )
    20181029_193904.jpg
I just need to solidify the real bumper bits to the hinge so that they won't break off, and then I may have to trim the middle section of the bumper to aid in a smooth transformation.
I don't know if any of that makes sense and I'm unsure if the pictures are of any help, but there it is.

That's very helpful! I didn't think to use any parts of the original faux bumpers I was just gonna glue the pieces of the real bumper to the chest permanently but I guess it's better to have something to fill that space and also be able to move should you desire it to.

Please update us with your progress again!

Finished the bumper modification and ended up doing another modification... 20181030_170659.jpg
A little bit of trimming and now his whole headlight section tilts in like on the Studio Series figure.
I think it really improves his look.

I also discovered that under the translucent headlight that they painted silver is moulded detail of a headlight bulb and reflector dish which I colored chrome, but I couldn't get the silver paint off of the headlight cover. 20181030_170821.jpg

Anyway, here is the alt mode after both modifications.
    20181030_164732.jpg
I'll be starting a radicon thread soon detailing both modifications.

Looks perfect! I'll have to do that eventually. It's cool to see the extra molded details too. The parts count on this guy is really high (you might even say TOO high considering the faux bumpers that don't make sense).

I also strongly suggest you paint the eyes like I did. Light blue really makes the eyes come alive.

I plan on adding some paint eventually. I may do some more modifications first.

Here is the radicon thread for the modifications.

Got the Japanese release today. Wonder if there’s a difference in paint somewhere.

For the front side, you can skip the step of his chest/head transformation. Meaning leave the head as in bot mode

I received the Takara version today. For those interested, I don’t see any difference. *Possibly* The trim detail paint on the Takara version is more of a pure black than a silvery black, but I might be imagining that. Also the Autobot symbol is fuller and clearer in my Takara version, but that’s probably down to individual variation - it’s still faint. The Takara instructions are better, but even those don’t show the clip that holds the forearms in alt mode. There’s definitely no significant difference between the two beyond the Japanese text.

Unfortunately since MPM-5 Barricade (& brand unification I assume), there hasn't been any more significant differences in MPMs between Hasbro and Takara releases

Yeah it’s super sad that they’re not different anymore. It was cool to have a “premium” option if you wanted it. Plus the reveals were fun. Now it’s literally just a lot more money for the same figure but also months later.

Here’s a pic of my modded bee in bot mode. I’m very happy with the results and he’s actually easier to transform now and he looks better. Next I might try @Lukelbs headlight mod to angle the chest bits but that’ll have to wait for another day.

Quite the contrary for me actually! At first I thought the same too, but then was introduced to the wonderful world of Amazon Japan. Imagine my wonder to being able to import the figure from another country for even cheaper than the price at US retail. Surreal moment for sure

Something about having kanji running along the boxes of my collectibles is really aesthetically pleasing too :)

That looks great - what paint did you use in the eyes and what did you use to add black to the grill?

Wait, CHEAPER? How is that possible? Amazon.jp has very high shipping usually.
Thanks! The chest and some other details are gundam marker panel liners, and the eyes are a few layers of white paint pen and metallic blue gundam markers.

Here's a record of my past order. I think what really drives shipping cost down is the purchase option you go with must be fulfilled by Amazon Japan. This was purchased back when it was standard for retail price of the US release to be 79.99
