Well, I got Ruby out of the box, and I can't say I have been thrilled so far. Like I said previously, the only other figure from Medicos I have is Super Action DIO, which worked great and was a lot of fun, even if it was a little more fragile and less poseable than a Bandai or Goodsmile figure. This is Medicos stepping into uncharted territory and they have a long way to go before they really hit their stride. This happened shortly after pulling the figure out of its packaging. This figure has loose joints, which is already an issue on a figure that doesn't have large, heavy accessories... and Ruby comes with both her cloak and a MASSIVE version of Crescent Rose. She can stand up on her own, but not while holding the scythe. She also doesn't have much in the way of ankle tilts (they're there, but obstructed) so she's going to have to be up on her stand. The stand plugs into the back of her cloak with a fairly secure connection, but the cloak's peg for her back is too shallow and frequently pops out even when the stand isn't attached. In addition, there was thin black plastic flash near the pin-shaped trigger on the scythe. Not great QC for an $80 USD figure. One of the biggest sore points I have for this figure are her hands. Medicos' choices for her hands doesn't include many that can hold the shaft of her scythe, and the only one that can is fairly thin and prone to bending. Your other option for giving her a firm grip on the weapon is for her to hold the bolt -- a thin, brittle piece of plastic-- with her way too tight post holding hand. This is going to break very soon, I'm sure of it. There are good things about this figure. The proportions and size are excellent, especially if you want to display her next to figures from other lines. The paint work is pretty good- it didn't take me long to forgive how weird her eyes look (she's modeled on the manga's portrayal, I'd bet). But her limited articulation and display options mean that you're not getting a lot of bang for your $80 USD. I think I'd only recommend it if you absolutely have to have an anime-accurate Ruby Rose in 6-inch scale (and want to avoid the lower-end figures on the way). Overall, SAS Ruby Rose shows that Medicos really is out of their element in creating action figures of petite anime girls... maybe they should stick to Jojo. Goodsmile or Bandai would have knocked this one out of the park.
Thanks for your honest assessment of this figure. Like many others, I think the $80 price tag is a bit ridiculous and figured that what we would end up getting wouldn't justify it at all (unlike MP-39 Sunstreaker, who is very much worth the price). Didn't stop me from paying it though. I won't have SAS Ruby in hand for a few more weeks but I have to agree that Figma or S.H. Figuarts would've done RWBY characters more justice. Your review just reinforced that I should keep my expectations more reserved for this figure. Aside from the hands having trouble holding Crescent Rose, I also wished Medicos had included an optional smiling or laughing face for Ruby.
I hope the QC issues are only for the first run and that they'll be fixed later on like other lines. As for the hand options is it possible to use hands from other lines like Figma and/or Figuarts on Ruby?
The SAS hands use a similar post/hinge assembly to Figma, but I haven't tested them for compatibility yet. Even so, the hands would need to be very specifically shaped to grip onto Crescent Rose better, something that the hands she came with fail to do.
Yeah, I will forever wish Goodsmile had gotten the license instead. Oh well. Opened Ruby just now. Need to play with her more, but yeah there's definitely going to be a lot of balance issues with her I can tell. But so long as I can get her in to some good poses eventually, I'll be happy. Cannot for the life of me remember what the cross shes comes with is or what to do with it though. Don't see anywhere to use the peg on it. It's not even included with her accessories in the promotional pictures, so didn't know it would be in there. I think the instructions say something about it, but no clue what...
Thinking about grabbing this from BBTS since my b-day is cominh this month and I'll have some extra funds. How does she didplay with lines like Figuarts and Figma?
Yeah, I'll attach some. I had pics in my original post but my old image hosting site got shut down. Here you go: She's around the same size, and fits in pretty well with them. Definitely doesn't look out of place.
Hmm... This was the best pic I have with her in it I could track down. Shows her with a pretty wide variety of stuff. Do have another one with her on my shelf if you'd like, but she's with a bunch of stuff that don't make sense (in front of my Digimon and next to some Naruto guys haha) and don't really show size well since I couldn't fit her into the Figma shelf due to the giant scythe lol. But in general I think she fits pretty well. She should be on the shorter end and she is so it works for me. Probably cancelled. I'm checking all the time for updates and there's just nothing... Have had quite a few events for them to be presented at and there's just been silence as far as I've found. Which is pretty much anything but a good sign. Really, REALLY hope we still get articulated RWBY at this scale that's decent but I've kind of lost hope for this particular line.
Yeah I think the reception to Ruby was almost universally bad, because of the issues I pointed out in my review. I heard similar things from a few other people I talked to. All we can hope for now is that a different company gets the license. As stated previously, Goodsmile and Bandai would be the best ones for the job.
Just read your review above. I think I'm going to have to pass on it. For the price there just seems to be too many little things wrong that add up for a figure I'd have to pay between $90 - $120 to get.
I was hoping for Max Factory RWBY figures, so I was a bit disappointed that Medicos got the license. Of course, since I wanted a Ruby figure in my collection (I ended up becoming a massive fan of RWBY and it's characters - thanks, Monty), I finally ordered a Medicos version, currently (20-09-2018) on sale at HLJ.com. Super Action Statue: RWBY Ruby Rose I'm hoping we still get other characters (apart from the rest of Team RWBY, Team JNPR should also not be neglected) in this line, and that Medicos fixes the issues that came with Ruby. And, of course, the absence of a giant scythe accessory should make them a little less pricey (On the other hand, they could end up including Yang's bike). I'm also hoping the delay to the other Medicos RWBY figures is also partly because they've decided to update their prototype designs to represent later versions of some of the characters. I would definitely prefer a figure of this version of Yang (complete with golden arm) compared to her earlier self.
4400 yen is basically half off MSRP so that's a damn good price. Kinda wish I waited for this sale. But it does kinda bode ill for the future of Medicos RWBY figures when Ruby is being offered for that low a price. I did see her here and there at Japanese retail but it was always just one figure at each location, and never a huge stack of her. I coulda sworn that Medicos showed off a Weiss prototype but I can't recall for sure. Haven't heard any news on that front.
