I not only dislike this expensive/over-priced toy... I loathe a toy market that has room for kitschy "collector" junk like Vinyl's.

It's true that toys can be brilliant works of art! But does that mean I want to pay some weird-o artist to make mini-vinyl's of action figures and properties I love?

What ever happened to artists selling more traditional things like paintings and statues? Must they rely on OCD-driven collection habits to make a living? And do the fans need to buy artsy-junk just because it features a character they like?

Sorry, that's just my view on it. A lot of these are nothing buy over-glorified paper weights, and not proper figures. When I see a Super7 toy, I don't think, "YES! $75 IS PERFECT! IT'S 12 INCHES, AFTER ALL!"   I think, "Wow... and people will actually pay for this simplistic crap? How much?"   Guess I'm getting too old/90s-traditional for toys?

 

This is obviously homaging an older style of toy (mid-to-late 70's)... that is cool. But, probably a lot of the young kids who grew up with Transformers don't remember what this is homaging.

That is Super7's whole shtick though, nostalgia gimmicks or production style from vintage toys. Its not for everybody, but when done well it can make for a very cool piece.

Hasbro and Takara do not license out transforming toys. So you can't knock Super7 for that.

 

I would be down with an Action Masters revival by Super 7. I am not as much a fan of this. I would probabaly like it more if the figure had more accurate proportions to the cartoon and was fully painted. Basically, I would be more interested in something that looked more like another vinyl figure, Metalforce Optimus Prime.

Having gotten to know Super 7 as a company from their Masters of the Universe line, I know that this is supposed to emulate what a vintage vinyl figure from Japan would look like. These types of vinyls were very prevalent in the 70's-90's and they have a following. The founder of Super 7, Brian Flynn, is a big fan of these Japanese vinyls and Super 7's first toy was a vinyl figure I believe. Anyway, so basically, this is being offered to cater to his tastes and probably the interests of other Super 7 employees. Which I have no problem with. Toy companies should make what they are passionate about. I just wish they would take their Trasnformers license and also make something that I think would get more mass appeal, like a new Action Masters line.

 

I think you have this view because you're not entirely aware of the genesis of art vinyl toys. Before the days of Hasbro/Disney/Marvel etc. licensing their characters to vinyl toy makers, there was a huge movement of art vinyl toys from independent artists who had produced rotocast vinyl in extremely limited quantities (in the 10 to 2,000 range and every thing in between); a way for artists to produce their art in 3D form, not just on canvas and paper.

Just look up key words like Michael Lau, Tim Tsui, Kidrobot (in the early 2000s, before they started licensing properties), Jason Sui, Huck Gee, Frank Kozik, Dalek, Dunny, Tristan Eaton, Sket One, MAD*L, Toy2R, Be@rbrick, Ciboys, KAWS, and the list goes on and on...

Creative teams from the aforementioned Hasbro/Disney/Marvel, etc. companies started seeing these vinyl toys at comic cons, online, etc. and saw the popularity of them and how much some of these art vinyl toys were fetching in the aftermarket and decided to get in on the popularity by licensing their properties to these vinyl toy makers, including Funko who looks to have pretty much every license under the sun and what you see today are mass-produced vinyl toys of characters you love. Its the art vinyl toy for the masses and a natural progression to a small art scene that has blossomed into something almost entirely different than what it used to be.

Its fine that these types of toys aren't for you but they will fit the likes of others; just like how some TF fans hate Beast Wars, whereas others love it and so on.

I see that you love 90s-traditional toys. There are many people that would say what you like is utter crap and that its all about 80s-traditional toys and on and on.

I don't think there's any need to blast this toy or an entire industry of vinyl toys just because you don't like them. Maybe some day, something within them will pique your interest and you'll buy something you like. Maybe not.

 

Honestly, if the head were about 20% smaller, I would get the inevitable color version (super seven 7 will likely produce a color version that is not an exclusive). Since I know that changing the head size will not happen, there is still about a 50% chance I will get it.

 

Agreed if they keep it all clear. OR keep the center piece that comes off clear & the rest make solid (non translucent) red & blue.

 

I kinda wish the Transformers Heroes of Cybertron line to come back in that same fashion . But at 2" - 5" tall (depending on size) & posable. And NOT half assed! If they put some marketing behind it and had different genre's made for the toy line. Like Transformers More Then Meets The Eye 1984, Beast Wars 1996, Beast Machines 1999, Robots in Disguise 2001, TF:Animated 2008, TF rime 2010, RiD 2015, ect. CW/TR/POTP 2016-2018, like that. But they should all be cartoon characters.

 

So this was supposed to be available at SDCC. Did anyone get this?

Looks like Bikkuriman style stickers that come with thet MOTU muscle figures. They already showed off that they’re doing transformers versions.
