Received my custom painted Beast Machines Optimus Primal today. He's great and I'll happily skip the overpriced Encore version.
Picked him up from TaoBao for US$100 plus shipping.
Wasn't sure what I'd get,, whether it'd be a KO or something, but turns out it's a custom hand-painted re-deco of the Year of the Monkey Air Attack Primal.
So I have no worries about gold plastic shattering.
The deco's really nice, a deep coffee/charcoal colour like the cartoon with gorgeous metallic blue and gold accents. Much nicer than the brownish hues Takara is using. It's hard to find good pics of the character from the cartoon but the deco seems really close.
There's a bit of a scuff mark on the chest where he rubbed against the packaging - he was well packed but shipping all the way from China was a little rough. Should be an easy touch up with a little gold paint, then I'll hit the whole thing with a protective top coat to give him added resistance to scuffs and scratches.
He's not quite in scale with MP Primal, but still - looks amazing and the best I'm likely to see for a long time. Hard to see but he even has has nice metallic blue paint on the eyes

And in comparison with Takara's Encore

And this is probably how I'll pose him on the shelf, once I've gotten around to re-painting the Megabolt head into a blue Beast Machines Megatron

    No.

When I first got back into collecting it was the beginning of 2001 RID and there was a lot of Beast Machines still on shelves at the toy stores (that still existed back then). Supreme Cheetor was on sale for $12. I bought two because "DAMN! WHAT A VALUE!"

I was ripped off horribly. That mold should have shipped with a seventy-five dollar check in it and a voucher to the dump.

I think that figure originally retailed for $40 to $50 or something like that. I used to own a Supreme Cheetor figure when I was a kid and I loved it. I got mine on Christmas Eve, 2000 when I was 6. Looking back on the figure as an adult almost 20 years later, I consider this figure to be a guilty pleasure (a figure I like that everyone else hates). Why did you buy two?

At the time I bought two of everything. One for play/display and one to keep sealed.

this particular mold should be burned with fire and its ashes scattered to the wind.

Terrible mold (official and KO)!  There\'s something inherently BAD about this mold and they try to cash out on nostalgia from most of us older collectors

I am. The figure hasn't aged well (having recent exposure to it again due to the Chinese New Year version), but the deco is nicer than the original I own.

I'd love to get this but I'm not sure whether to wait until the insane price has gone down, or to buy it before it suddenly disappears. On the one hand, the seeming lack of interest should lower the price over time, but equally I doubt they've produced this release in high numbers.

For those who don't know, "Beast Wars Returns" is the Japanese fake name for Beast Machines.

You're right, RiD 2001 is a horrid toyline; it was mostly repaints and late releases of otherwise cancelled product. For fuck's sake, they tried to pass off G1 Bruticus as a modern toy.

I just found my original still misb. Was interested in this guy but I thought I already had him, now I know I do.

I have to disagree, the original molds for rid 2001 are still among some of my favorites.
