So I searched for an easy modification (because ive never done actual modifications on toys before) for our boy shockwave here that BADLY needed some knee articulation and I can across Ultraman Zoffy's thread and I really liked the materials that he used and how it was done. I did a little tweaking to his design and came up with my own way by having the receiving joint inside the lower leg. It wasn't too bad of an operation, hope y'all like it! I started off with 2 of each of these and cut them down to fit where I want them, and these are the tools I used, hollowed out his thighs and took off the mushroom peg and got rid of the plastic that held the mushroom peg inside his lower leg and had to get rid of some of the plastic on the top of the leg where the thigh will have to collapse. The leg on the left is finished and glued and the one on the right is dremmeled, ready to go but not glued. here; he is glued and assembled, front view with no height difference from before, back view, side view to show gap and the end result, and he transforms exactly like he should and still pegs in just fine! makes a great figure an even better figure!
I think I might be trying this soon. No way I am paying for the DSA ones that dont even work in alternate mode. Thanks for posting.
This just underlines how bizarre it is that Hasbro didn't give him knee joints to begin with – ball joints could be molded in with no extra parts count. It's ridiculous that we have to do this ourselves.
I don't wanna use my Kre-O parts...I need them to build-checks Ebay-Never mind. How do I hack his knees in half?
I hear ya, and cutting skills at a pro level aren't needed because all of the tricky cutting is mostly on the inside of the leg so its ok to be messy, no one looks INSIDE the legs; right?!? Lolz I totally agree and wish I didn't have to do it personally... LOLOLZ!! On the lower half of the leg? I just cut out a slot big enough for the ball to fit thru, and then cut out however much towards the back in a v shape to have room for the lower thigh can fit thru while bending his leg
I never thought about using Lego’s. Heck, I didn’t even know Lego’s HAD ball joint pieces... (those *are* Legos, right?)
They came from a Kreo set, back when they made the larger, leader class buildable bots out of blocks LIKE Lego blocks.
Oh yes, Lego has tons of various joints. They have two sizes of ball and socket joints and tons of hinge joints and a few different types of ratchet joints. They're great for this kind of thing. However these specific are from Kreo, which is the same kind of building blocks as Lego, but cheaper and of lower quality.
thank you both so much, I wish I had the patience to do more projects like this, but I'm a really bad procrastinator and I hate getting started on alot of things for some reason... Once things get rolling, they are usually nice pleasant experiences. But I will likely do something else soon, maybe giving him bicep swivel.
Nice! I would like to see that. Patience is certainly key when it comes to custom projects. Keep up the good work.
Lego Bionicles has a lot of good parts for doing customs. I used balljoints for my Son's, and tried the Shapeways set on mine. And dont be scared, it's fun cutting up a perfectly good figure. Lol. And the arms are real easy to do btw.
